Twenty Three

There he was. Staring right at me from the end of the boardwalk with the fury of a thousand men in his eyes.

My father.

He began walking hastily toward me and I gripped nervously to Kian's arm. He turned and saw him.

"Is that?"

I nodded.

"Well shit!" he exclaimed.

He grabbed my hand inexhaustibly and pulled me into Matt's booth.

"Um hi?" he said, seeing us both shelter our silhouettes with the curtain.

"Matt, whatever happens, you did not see Sam. You don't know who Sam is and most importantly, you will not fight anyone no matter what happens.

He nods and acts normally, putting the big bear in front of us and gets a small child to come over and try his luck at the game. My father walked over seemingly calm and showed a picture of me to Matt.

"Have you seen my son? He ran away from home and I've missed him a lot and we just want him home." He lied.

I gritted my teeth and Kian kissed my nose comfortingly.

"No, I'm sorry sir, I've never seen that boy in my life."

I almost sighed from relief, that Matt had covered for him. My dad scoffed and walked along the pier flashing the photo more.

"You have to leave. Now." Kian said.

"What about you?" I asked.

"Don't worry about me," he said, standing up tall and facing the direction my father was.

"Kian, don't!" I whisper-screamed at my boyfriend, who was about to do something incredibly stupid.

He had tears in his eyes. "I love you."

"Don't do this to me," I begged.

A trail of salty water came from his eye and rolled aimlessly down his cheek.

"Take him somewhere safe, Matt."

Matt nodded and grabbed my arm.

"Let's go, Sam."

I tugged away.

"No!"

Kian sighed. "It has to be this way, as long as you're okay I'll still be with you forever. I love you, Sam."

I shook my head vigorously, now beginning to bawl my eyes out. "Stop that. Stop acting like you're going to die. He's not going to kill you, Kian."

He made his first step and didn't look back. "I can't promise anything. Matt. Now."

Matt pulled me and with all my strength I fought back. I cried pathetically watching Kian parade toward the man who easily could mean his demise, fists balled up as I was dragged to Matt's car.
