Waking up in our bed, the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, I felt the warmth of Lily next to me. My hand instinctively found its place on her belly, and even in the haze of waking up, I couldn't help but think about how much had changed in such a short time.
The baby. Or, maybe more than one baby—I couldn't shake that thought ever since Lily mentioned how quickly her bump had grown. DAMN IT!
The past week had been filled with moments of disbelief, excitement, and questions. Today was the day we'd finally get some answers.
The doctor's appointment was in a few hours, and even though I felt a mixture of excitement and nerves, I could tell Lily was more anxious than she let on.
I turned toward her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Morning," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled sleepily at me.
"Morning," she murmured back, placing her hand over mine on her belly.
"You ready for today?" I asked, though I already knew her answer. I could see the concern in her eyes, but also the hope.
"As ready as I'll ever be," she sighed, her hand resting gently on the bump. "I just want to make sure everything's okay."
"We'll find out soon," I reassured her, leaning in for a proper kiss before we both slowly got out of bed. "And hey, no matter what, I'm here. We're in this together."
She gave me a soft smile, the kind that made my chest tighten with love for her. We got ready, showered, and dressed, though the air between us was charged with anticipation.
The drive to the doctor's office felt longer than it should have, the city of London passing by in a blur as my mind focused on one thing—the baby. Or babies? I didn't know why that idea stuck with me, but I had a feeling today would hold more surprises than we expected.
When we arrived at the clinic, I could tell Lily was trying to stay calm. I held her hand tightly, giving her a reassuring squeeze as we walked inside.
The waiting room felt too quiet, the ticking of the clock on the wall the only sound cutting through the nervous energy around us. After what felt like forever, they finally called her name, and we were led to the examination room.
The doctor, a kind woman in her early 40s, smiled warmly at us as we settled in. "How are we feeling today?" she asked as she prepped the ultrasound machine.
"Nervous," Lily admitted with a small laugh, her hand gripping mine tightly as she lay back on the examination table.
The doctor nodded sympathetically. "That's completely normal. Let's have a look and see how everything's going, shall we?"
As she started the ultrasound, the room went still. I watched the screen, my heart racing as I waited for the image to come into view. There, on the screen, were two distinct little shapes. Two.
The doctor smiled broadly. "Well, congratulations! You're having twins."
For a moment, I couldn't speak. Twins? I felt like my brain short-circuited. Twins. I glanced at Lily, whose eyes were wide with shock. Her mouth opened and closed like she was trying to say something but couldn't find the words.
"Twins?" she whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "Are you sure?"
The doctor nodded, pointing to the screen. "Yes, you can see them both here. They're developing nicely, and everything looks perfectly healthy."
A wave of relief washed over me, followed by excitement I didn't think was possible. Twins. Two babies. "Lily," I whispered, squeezing her hand as I leaned closer. "We're having twins."
