It's Saturday and I'm sat in my dad's office while he is in meeting after meeting sorting out the paper work in his files, we got back from the beach house two weeks ago and I have only just got over the holiday blues. I work here now instead of the cafe and I have to be honest I am kind of enjoying it a lot more. Andrew and I have even made an unusual friendship, I bring him coffee in the mornings I work and he brings me whatever fresh baked good his girlfriend had made at home and we sometimes sit and eat our lunch together when my Dad is in meetings or isn't at work. I look up from the paper work I just finished reading as Andrew comes walking in the room with a huge smile plastered on his face.
"Someone is in a good mood." I comment as he is practically shining, "Sorry for sitting at your desk my Dad is having an online meeting in the office and I wanted to give him some peace and quiet."
"No worries at all, feel free to sit there whenever. Especially now that it is no longer my desk." I look at him wide eye and think for a second he has quite but then slowly remember that he had applied for a high ranking job at the company. "Oh my goodness did you get the job? Wow you got the job didn't you!"
"Yes! I just had a meeting with the big boss just this afternoon and I have to say your grandfather is now one of my favourite people. Said that I got the job due to your fathers high recommendation. I start next week and need to help Mr Smith find a new assistant but then I move onto the other side of the office with my new desk in the shared office in the east side of the building. Hey do you fancy the job you pretty good at it."
"Congratulations Andrew you really do deserve it!"
"Thank you Emily I really appreciate it, considering Mr Smith said I had recommendations from two members of the family." He gives me a knowing smile and I didn't think he would find out about the letter. "It was beautifully written. Have you ever considered going into writing? I think you would make a fantastic author. I have seen the way you write up the notes from the meetings and I also happened to see the library your father had installed in his house for you. That is an impressive amount of books and I was even more impressed when I was informed that you have read the majority of them."
"Thank you Andrew." Is all I can get out too embarrassed to say anything else, I have never considered it- I mean I have read most of the greats, Austin, the Brontë's, Fitzgerald, Proust, Tolstoy so to even try and see myself doing that would be hard and immeasurable. Saved by the bell Jesse sticks his head out of his office, "Em could I talk to you please? And Andrew congratulations, it is well deserved. Now you can get to work trying to find me an assistant half as good as you." He offers Andrew a clipped nod before disappearing back into his office, I say goodbye to Andrew and follow him into the office.
"Emily." He looks nervous to dress me and I feel very odd and unnerved.
"Dad." I answer back and he smiles at this and I'm confused again he went from being nervous to smiling back at me. "I don't think I will ever be able to tell you how happy it makes me every time you call me that."
"Well since we are here I have something to talk to you about too. well something to give to you, a present per se." I tell him deciding it's finally time to tell him about me changing my name. I already did it, I just didn't tell him yet I was just waiting for the right time, this is the right time and I have been carrying them around in my bag ever since. He looks curious now and I reach down to grab my bag that I left in here from the floor and grab out the papers. I had them to him and his eyes widen in surprise.
