Titus POV
The past month had been a whirlwind of paperwork and pack duties. As Alpha, my responsibilities were endless, but through it all, my thoughts were constantly drawn back to Adeline. She had become my primary focus, the anchor in the chaos of my life.
I had taken precautions to ensure her safety. Unseen guards were strategically placed around the perimeter of the diner, ensuring that she remained protected while still allowing her to go about her daily routine. It was a delicate balance—ensuring her safety while not encroaching on her sense of freedom. After all, she was not only my mate but potentially the future Luna of the Red Moon Pack.
Zander and I had made it a habit to visit the diner regularly. It gave us an excuse to see Adeline, to stay close to her, and to ensure that she was adjusting well. Each visit was a mix of casual conversation and the subtle pleasure of her presence. It was during these visits that I found some semblance of normalcy, even amidst the whirlwind of pack duties.
Today, as we walked into the diner, I could feel the familiar stir of anticipation. The bustling atmosphere of the diner felt like a cocoon of warmth and routine. My eyes immediately found Adeline behind the counter. When our gazes met, a small, genuine smile appeared on her face, and for a moment, everything else seemed to fade away.
Zander and I took our usual seats at the counter, and as always, I was acutely aware of Adeline's presence. I noticed the subtle shift in her demeanor when she approached us to take our orders. The way she moved, her careful attention to detail—everything about her was endearing and captivating.
"Hey there," I greeted her, trying to keep my tone light despite the swirling thoughts in my head. "How's your day been?"
"It's been good," Adeline replied, her smile faltering slightly as she glanced between Zander and me. "Actually, Titus, I need to talk to you. It's important."
The sudden shift in her tone sent a jolt of unease through me. My wolf, Blaze, was restless, reacting to the seriousness of her words. I glanced at Zander, who raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued by the change in atmosphere.
"Sure," I said, trying to mask my concern with a calm expression. "Let's talk. How about in the back room? We can have some privacy."
Adeline nodded, and I could see the apprehension in her eyes. She led the way to the back room of the diner, the quiet of the space contrasting sharply with the lively din of the main area. Once inside, she closed the door behind us, and the tension in the room became palpable.
I watched as she took a deep breath, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her apron. My heart raced, and I could feel Blaze's agitation as he sensed the gravity of the conversation about to unfold.
"What's on your mind?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. "You said it was important."
Adeline looked up at me, her eyes reflecting a mix of determination and uncertainty. "I've been doing some research," she began, her voice steadying as she spoke. "About mates, and what that means. I've realized that... that you and I might be mates."
My breath caught in my throat. The realization that she had come to this conclusion was both reassuring and terrifying. Blaze surged forward, eager and restless, his instincts aligning with the truth of her words.
"Adeline," I said softly, stepping closer. "I've been feeling the same pull. It's been on my mind a lot, too. I've wanted to talk to you about it, but I didn't want to push you."
Her expression softened slightly, but the underlying tension remained. "I didn't know how to approach it, either. But after everything, I needed to know where we stand. What does this mean for us?"
I took a deep breath, trying to organize my thoughts. "Being mates is a significant bond. It's not just about attraction or connection; it's about partnership and responsibility. I want you to know that I'm committed to this, to you. It's important for us to talk about what comes next, how we navigate this."
Adeline nodded, her eyes searching mine for sincerity. "I want to understand what this means for us, too. I've been so focused on keeping myself safe and figuring out my future that I didn't really know how to handle this."
I reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure it out together. I want you to be comfortable and to feel secure. We'll take things one step at a time, and I'll be here to support you."
The tension in the room seemed to ease slightly, and Adeline's posture relaxed. "Thank you, Titus. I'm glad we're talking about this. I just needed to know where we stand."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "We'll talk more about this. For now, let's focus on the present and how we can move forward together."
As we left the back room and returned to the diner, the weight of the conversation hung between us, but there was also a newfound clarity. The path ahead might be uncertain, but for the first time, it felt like we were on the same page, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
