Aspen's POV
I had followed her discreetly, my mind racing with the implications of her departure. The bus station was crowded with travelers, but I kept my eyes on her. She was standing near the ticket counter, her suitcase beside her, her face a mixture of determination and fear.
I approached quietly, my footsteps almost silent against the concrete floor. Adeline seemed lost in thought, oblivious to the danger approaching her. I had to end this before it got any worse. She was a reminder of a past I had worked hard to bury, and I couldn't let her escape and potentially disrupt the life I had carefully built.
"Adeline," I said softly, my voice carrying a tone of menace despite my efforts to keep it calm.
She jumped slightly, turning to face me with wide eyes. "Mr. Aspen. What are you doing here?"
I smiled coldly, my mind focused on the task at hand. "I couldn't let you leave without a little chat."
Her eyes darted around the station, searching for an escape, but I could see the resolve in her face wavering. "I don't want any trouble. I'm just trying to leave."
"Leaving won't solve anything," I said, taking a step closer. "You're part of a past that I can't ignore. It's time we settled things."
As I moved closer, my intentions clear, I saw her fear escalate. She took a step back, her eyes locked on mine, trying to keep her composure. Just as I was about to close the distance, a familiar voice cut through the tension.
"Adeline!" Titus's voice rang out, filled with urgency.
I turned to see Titus striding toward us, his face a mask of concern and anger. He had clearly picked up on the situation and was determined to protect his mate. He reached us just as I was closing in on Adeline, his presence a formidable barrier between us.
"What's going on here, Aspen?" Titus demanded, his tone sharp. "Why are you bothering her?"
I met his gaze, my resolve unshaken. "This doesn't concern you, Titus. It's a family matter."
Titus's eyes narrowed, his body tensing with protective instinct. "She is my concern."
Adeline looked between us, her face pale and stricken. She took a cautious step toward Titus, seeking refuge in his presence. Titus reached out, his hand resting gently on her back, offering her the reassurance she desperately needed.
"Leave her alone, Aspen," Titus said firmly, his voice brooking no argument. "You won't like the outcome"
I could see the determination in Titus's eyes, and I knew there was no point in pushing further. I took a step back, my frustration mounting but tempered by the realization that I had been outmaneuvered.
"Fine," I said coldly. "But remember, Adeline, you can't run from the past forever."
With that, I turned and walked away, my mind already racing with plans to address this new complication. I would have to find another way to deal with the lingering shadows of my past.
As Titus watched me go, he turned back to Adeline, his expression softening with concern. "Are you okay?"
Adeline nodded, her eyes filled with gratitude and relief. "Thank you, Titus. I—I didn't know what to do."
Titus pulled her into a comforting embrace, his voice gentle. "You're safe now. Let's get you home."
As they walked back to the car, the weight of the encounter hung heavy in the air. Titus was determined to protect his mate, and I was left to grapple with the consequences of my actions. The past was catching up with me, and I needed to find a way to resolve it before it tore apart everything I had worked so hard to build. Adeline had to disappear, for good this time.
