The car ride started off very awkwardly.

(Y/N) wasn't sure what to say without her mother there, and Devon didn't do much other than keep his eyes on the road, fiddling with the ends of her pleated skirt. Devon, noticing the action, glanced down to her hands, his eyes then sliding down to her bare thighs before he quickly snapped his gaze back to the road. Deciding to counteract (Y/N)'s obvious nerves, he began to start talking.

"Well, I know you're in school, but I haven't even asked how it's going," he chuckled as he turned the wheel to turn the entire car down onto a different road. "So, how's it going?"

"It's going fine," she shrugged.

"Any classes you're liking right now?"

"Mm... I like my AP English class and my Forensics Science class," she spoke after a moment's contemplation. "I guess the English class you can guess why since I want to be a writer. As for the Forensics class, I had an interest in joining law enforcement at one time over being a writer, but that faded quickly."

"But you're taking the class because...?" Devon continued with a smile.

"I mean, it's still interesting learning all of that stuff," she chuckled softly. "We're learning about different unsolved and solved cases while seeing what instruments and techniques the forensic scientists used to try and solve said cases."

"That does sound interesting," Devon hummed with an understanding nod.

"Yeah..." she trailed off. "It is."

Silence once more descended upon them, yet this time, it wasn't awkward nor tense as it once was. Finally, Devon pulled up into the driveway of Katherine's two-story house that she shared with (Y/N). He frowned when seeing how small it was, glancing around the neighborhood to see that it also wasn't in the best condition, either. He could tell from some of the curious stares alone when he drove down the street that his sleek car was a sight not many saw often, if at all.

Hm...

His fingers tapped the steering wheel as he waved (Y/N) off, trailing her figure as she walked up the porch to unlock the front door and step inside.

I should probably ask Katherine and (Y/N) to move in with me soon.

I mean, I am intending to marry Katherine.

So, why wait?

Shifting the car in gear, Devon drove off, and unknown to him, (Y/N) watched as he left through a small sliver in the curtains. She let out a sigh of relief when he was finally gone, having felt nothing but antsy when noticing his car lingering in the driveway. She hoped that he liked her—or at least, didn't already think she was strange. She knew that sometimes couples broke up because of one partner's kid or kids, and she hoped to God that such a thing wouldn't happen to her mother.

Only endless guilt would plague her if it did.

Then again, it would also show that Devon wasn't serious about her mother at all, and it would reveal his true character before it was too late.

(Y/N) nervously chewed on her thumb nail.

But that won't happen... right?

Yeah...

It won't.

Shaking her head to remove such doubtful thoughts from her mind, she climbed up the stairs towards her room so she could begin working on some of her homework that was due the following week. Popping her headphones in as she sat down, bobbing her head to the beat of the music, she pulled out her assignments and allowed her pencil to scribble across the paper. First it was an English assignment, then Math homework, and finally her Japanese to English translations.

Just as she was about done, she startled from the sudden hand that landed on her shoulder, turning to spot her mother standing there with a sheepish smile on her face. Giving Katherine a sheepish smile of her own, (Y/N) removed one earbud as she fully spun around in her chair to face her.

"Hey, mom, what's up?" She asked.

"I was just letting you know I was home," Katherine smiled as she crossed her arms. "I tried calling out your name, but you didn't answer. Sorry if I startled you, kid."

"Oh, no worries," she shrugged. "I was just focused on my homework, is all."

"Alright, well, I'm gonna start on dinner," Katherine continued as she uncrossed her arms and began making her way to the door, stopping only momentarily to glance back, her hand on the doorframe. "Oh, but I was going to invite Devon over, too. Would that be alright? I know you just met him today, so I'll only call him if you're comfortable with the idea. I just thought it would be a way for you to get to know each other better."

"Yeah, no, that's fine," (Y/N) shook her head with a smile. "I don't mind."

"Alright," Katherine smiled.

With that, she swept out the door with her phone already to her ear, leaving (Y/N) to finish her homework. After (Y/N) was done, she took her headphones out and tossed her pencil on the table before giving a small stretch, grunting when feeling the bones pop in her back. Letting out a sigh, she plugged her phone in before retreating to the bathroom with her night clothes to get a shower for the night. The warm water felt great against her skin after the long day, as it always did. After scrubbing her hair and body thoroughly, she exited the shower, dried herself off, and dressed. Upon completion of her skin care routine, she then hung up her towel, picked up her phone, and trotted downstairs.

She was surprised to already spot Devon in the kitchen helping Katherine cooking.

Giving a small shrug of her shoulders, (Y/N) then began to set the table for three instead of two. As she did so, however, she didn't notice the way Devon glanced at her when he saw her out of the corner of his eye. Smiling softly upon sight of her, he then turned back to Katherine.
