"Kane!" (Y/N) called out as soon as she spotted the boy dressed in a dress shirt and pants the same as Devon, albeit which were less expensive, jogging towards him to give him a tight hug which he readily returned. "Thanks for coming!"

"Of course," he chuckled as he stepped back. "Wow, you look great. Is that a new dress?"

"Yeah, Devon got it for me for today."

"It's really nice."

"Thanks."

"Shall we head in, then?" Devon interrupted the two as he stepped up with Katherine on his arm, his smile tight when looking between the two.

(Y/N) nodded as she and Kane walked inside with Devon and Katherine trailing behind them, soon enough an attendant leading them to their designated table. It was a booth, in reality, with cushy seats and minimal lighting that cast shadows along the walls whenever someone moved. The first part of the evening was a bit awkward, mostly due to the way Devon's gaze was practically boring into Kane, however soon enough Katherine distracted him enough with conversation so that Kane could finally ease up and chat with (Y/N).

Yet, Devon was not so easily abstracted.

He could hear every whispered word, every small chuckle, and notice every smile (Y/N) gave to Kane, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to grab her and march her out of the restaurant away from Kane.

Again, it was maddening.

(Y/N) was maddening.

He felt as if he were using that word far too often, and now he realized why.

Why was he this consumed?

Why?

There was no plausible answer, and if he were being honest, he wasn't sure if he even wanted there to be one. All he knew was how vile the emotion he was feeling currently due to Kane's and (Y/N)'s interaction. The way she looked at him, and the way he looked at her suggested nothing but friendship—a pure, loving friendship that hardly had any ground for his hatred to be justifiable, if it were justifiable at all. Yet, all the same, Devon knew Kane was a pillar of support (Y/N) could lean against if she needed it, and he was sure she needed him.

Devon despised such a thought.

If he had his way, he believed the only person (Y/N) could ever rely on was him.

She'd only ever need him.

The rest of the dinner went smoothly, with all three giving (Y/N) their gifts after dessert and watching as she unwrapped a silver necklace, a book, and a set of car keys. At that, she glanced up at Devon with a hint of curiosity in her eyes, obviously confused about why she was getting something like a set of keys as a gift. Then, her expression morphed into light shock when the meaning behind the present finally dawned on her.

"You're not serious... are you?" She gaped at him, both Katherine and Kane also finally understanding what the car keys meant.

"You didn't," Katherine gasped.

"I did," Devon chuckled, obviously pleased by (Y/N)'s reaction. "A brand new, 2024 Audi SQ8 4.0T Premium Plus that is black in color, just for you, (Y/N). It's already parked and waiting for you in the odriveway back at my place. I told you... a girl's eighteenth birthday is quite important, so it's only natural that I give you just as an important gift, if not even more so."

"Damn..." Kane exclaimed as he looked up the vehicle on his phone, letting out a slow whistle. "That is a nice car..."

"Oh, honey, you didn't have to do that..." Katherine started, yet there being a small smile on her lips that let Devon know how much she appreciated how thoughtful he was being.

"Don't worry," he settled a hand softly onto Katherine's own. "I wanted to."

"Wow..." (Y/N) murmur as she started at the car keys in her hand before glancing up at Devon, the warmth and gratitude in her gaze practically leaving him breathless, his eyes drinking in the sight of her sitting there, thankful. "I didn't know what to say, other than... thank you. Thank you so much, Devon. I'll make sure to cherish this car."

Devon smiled.

Oh, gratitude is such a good look on her... it almost just makes me want to do so much more.

After dinner, and after watching the sickening farewell between (Y/N) and Kane, Devon was driving back down the road towards his penthouse with Katherine beside him and (Y/N) in the back, just as last time. However, now the conversation was steered towards the excitement of seeing her new car, practically bouncing in her seat from how buzzed she was about the fact. Finally, when the car pulled into the driveway, (Y/N) was the first one out, already circling the luxury vehicle that was now her own. Devon smirked at the sight, sliding his hands into his pockets whilst watching her.

Hm...

Seems this gift was the right choice.

Then again, it was only natural that I can to the right decision, anyways.

"It's even more beautiful up close..." (Y/N) murmured as she unlocked the car, opening the driver's side to peer in. "And it has that fresh car smell! Awesome!"

"So... you like your gift?" Devon broached despite already knowing the answer.

"I love it!" She exclaimed, running up to him and engulfing him in a large hug, something that made his eyes widen and his heart trip in his chest due to his unexpected the action was. "Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have no idea how much I've been dying for a new car..."

"It's true," Katherine chuckled as she looked inside the car as well. "(Y/N) has been wanting a new vehicle for a long time."

Devon could say nothing.

All he could focus on was how (Y/N)'s body felt against his, how right it seemed.

He wrapped her tightly in his arms.

Well.

Would you look at that.

My second hug of the day, and, oh, how I cannot wait to receive more...

How I cannot wait.
