"So, (Y/N), how was your week?" Katherine asked that Friday night when both she and Devon had finally returned from their honeymoon to Japan. "Anything exciting happen? Like, any big tests or projects or something of the sort?"

"I did have a stats test, and I passed with a B+," (Y/N) mused as she ate her dinner.

"That's wonderful!" Katherine clapped.

"Thanks, mom."

Devon listened on to the mundane conversation as he too silently ate his dinner, forcing his gaze down towards his plate so he wouldn't have to look at (Y/N)—at (Y/N), whom he could only view as a perfect specimen of beauty that he could not admire out of disgust for himself. Gripping his fork tighter, he continued to eat, trying not to think about how being thousands of miles away from her in Japan was torturous, and about how the situation now, when she was only feet from him, was equally as tortuous. He promised himself these loathsome thoughts of his new stepdaughter would cease, yet it seemed as if the harder he tried to temper them, the more they just wanted to come back.

He felt as if his mind was slowly starting to unravel, his brow twitching at the mere idea.

It was ludicrous.

Baffling.

Completely improbable.

Yet there he was, walking proof that it wasn't.

"I also got a job," (Y/N) then continued, snapping him from his thoughts and making his eyes widen slightly in curiosity, however his self control keeping him from looking at her no matter how much he yearned to. "You know that cute little 90's themed diner, The Marietta? Well, I met my friend Dante there randomly, and he took my resume to the manager, and they decided to hire me on the spot. I actually start tomorrow."

"Really?" Katherine blinked before a smile split her face. "Oh, that's perfect. I know you worked in a bookstore before, so you probably have customer service experience, but waiting tables is a new skill that will come in handy one day. (Y/N), I'm proud of your initiative, good job."

"Yes," Devon uttered, finally giving in to the temptation of looking up, practically drinking in the sight of (Y/N) sitting there. "That is good initiative. And you said... your friend, Dante, helped you?"

"Mmhm," (Y/N) nodded, and if Devon looked close enough, he could see just a glimmer of bashfulness hidden within her gaze.

"Ah..." he nodded in understanding. "I see..."
