chapter eight

"What!?" Kane shouted in disbelief the next day, garnering more than a few annoyed glances his way since he was shouting so early in the morning, but he could hardly care as he stared at (Y/N) in disbelief from what he was hearing. "You're... moving? What? When was this decided? And why?"
"Yesterday," (Y/N) sighed as she shut her locker door, leaning against it with a frown. "We're moving in with Devon."
"So...?"
"So his place is more than an hour away from here," she continued, clutching her backpack's straps tighter at the thought. "That's why he's arranging for me to go to Kingston Private Academy."
"Seriously?" Kane blinked.
"Seriously."
"Isn't that... weird?" He frowned. "Why couldn't this have waited until you were in college?"
"That's what I said," she muttered.
"But...?"
"But apparently Devon and my mom wanted to take that next big step now," she grumbled, wanting to be happy for her mom but at the same time despising the situation she was forced into because of her's and Devon's decision. "I want to be supportive since... since after my dad died, she was heartbroken. I mean, you remember how I was, right? Well... my mom was ten times worse. So, now that she's dating again and finally with someone who makes her as happy as dad did... I don't want to say anything. Does that make sense?"
"No, yeah..." Kane trailed off as he flicked his eyes away, his expression twisting with a hint of guilt whilst doing so. "It makes sense."
(Y/N) parted her lips to speak again.
Yet, nothing came out.
Slowly, she closed her mouth and instead let out a heavy sigh, the mood between them slowly filling with a somber silence that was so unusual for the two. It was to the point where both were uncomfortable, but neither wanted to break the silence since it felt far too delicate for such a thing. Instead, they gave each other a glance that seemed to pass on a silent message, allowing for them to walk side by side towards their first class.
The rest of the day dragged on like that.
Kane tried to act like nothing was wrong even though it was obvious from the awkward pauses in their conversations that he was contemplating what she had told him. She could see hurt and worry glimmering within his eyes in constant flickers that only made her heart clench all the more. It wasn't her choice to move and leave her only friend behind, but she had to bend to the whims of said choice nonetheless, no matter how it tore her apart inside. When she finally arrived home, dragging herself out of her car and into the house, she thought she would find some semblance of relief, yet fate dealt her another bad hand when walking inside to find boxes upon boxes sat against the walls, each labeled with specific household items.
