chapter eleven

"How was your first day at Kingston, honey?" Katherine asked that evening over dinner, currently scooping a bite of salad on her fork as she looked at (Y/N) expectantly. "I hope it was okay..."
"It was actually really good," (Y/N) nodded, flashing her mother a reassuring smile. "I met this guy—Dante. He was really friendly, and helped me to the main office when I was lost. He even introduced me to some of his friends: Maya, Zara, and Carlos. I think having people was what really worried me since I'm not, you know, that social. So, today was... nice."
Devon's hands stilled.
"I'm glad," Katherine spoke, her eyes warm.
It was no secret that Katherine worried about (Y/N) more than she should. After all, she was a single mother taking care of a daughter whom she only wanted the best for. Such a fact was then only heightened when she brought her daughter out of her old life into a completely new one. Katherine wasn't a selfish person by any means, as she had sacrificed so much for (Y/N). Perhaps that was why she so easily yielded to Devon's suggestions, and why she then felt only guilt for doing so. Yet, now, as she looked upon (Y/N)'s smile, her heart was eased of its suffocating burden.
Katherine felt light again.
Devon, on the other hand, felt differently.
He thought he would be more than satisfied by (Y/N) now attending the school he knew would be best for her, engaging with students whom he knew would be best for her, but all he felt was mild discomfort and unease creep into his mind like a viral infection that didn't want to leave until he was consumed completely.
What was this?
Why was he feeling this?
Shouldn't he be more than pleased?
Shouldn't he want to congratulate (Y/N) on her easy adjustment since such a thing meant she was complying so much easier with his wants?
Yet, his tongue felt like lead.
So, he didn't say much of anything.
Staring down at his plate, Devon could feel a churning in his stomach that wasn't because of anything he ate, but because of a vile mode of thinking that left his entire body tense. To him, there was something wrong with the idea of (Y/N) becoming close to any sort of male figure other than him, and he pondered over this for several, agonizing seconds. It was perturbing, irrational, and completely unneeded.
