A month flew by far too past in (Y/N)'s opinion, and as she bid goodbye to Dante until the next week after their mid-winter break, she could feel her heart pounding rapidly the closer she drove back to her house. After all, in only a few short hours, they would be at the lodge where the wedding ceremony would be held, and then a few hours after that, carrying out the wedding altogether.

"Hey, how was your day?" Katherine asked as soon as (Y/N) walked through the door.

"Good," she nodded.

"Excellent," Katherine smiled. "And you have everything packed, right? We're leaving early tomorrow morning so we can get to the lodge, so make sure you have what you need tonight."

"Got it, mom," (Y/N) gave a wobbly smile as she walked upstairs to her room.

Closing the door behind her and leaning against the frame as soon as she threw her bag down, she let out a slow sigh. Chewing on her lip nervously, she anxiously paced back and forth in her room, unsure of what emotions she was even feeling since they kept swirling around. Yes, she felt happy that Devon was joining her family, but at the same time, she didn't want him to out of fear that soon enough, in her mind, he would replace her real father. Obviously, he couldn't in terms that he wasn't her birth father, but now that he was marrying Katherine, in the optimistic future, he would be in her life for a long time.

Gnawing at her nail's cuticle, she then shook her head as she fell backwards onto her bed.

No.

It'll be fine.

Everything'll be fine.

I'm sure.

(Y/N) went to sleep after dinner and a shower with these thoughts, but even then she still tossed and turned for the majority of the night, resulting in her waking up late and having to rush through her routine to get ready to leave at the appointed time. Thankfully, by the time she was running down the stairs with her bags in tow, breakfast was ready and waiting for her. Katherine, Devon, and (Y/N) are quickly before loading their luggage in the car and starting their journey towards the booked lodge for the wedding venue.

(Y/N) fidgeted anxiously in her seat.

The scenery blurred past as she stared out the car's window, too caught up in her 'what if' situations.

Finally, the exhaustion from her previous night's lack of sleep caught up to her, and soon enough, she found herself drifting against the window. Not long after, her eyes were completely closed whilst her breathing evened out, signaling that she had completely fallen asleep. Devon glanced at her from within the review mirror, a small smile curving at his lips upon noticing her exhausted state.

He found it endearing.

After all, he could see the wariness in her eyes, but knew that he would only be met with silence about such cautions after he made sure to reassure her of any of her worries.

The journey continued for several hours, and after many pit stops, ended at their destination. (Y/N) stepped out of the car with her phone clutched tightly in her hand, staring up at the large, wooden lodge lit up warmly and brightly. A worker came out to meet them, immediately taking their bags and leading them into the lobby where they were greeted with friends and family alike who had also just arrived. However, as it was a small affair like Katherine requested, there were only about fifty guests in total in attendance.

(Y/N)'s expression then lightened when spotting Kane and his family, immediately waving to him whilst she jogged towards him to give him a tight hug which he readily returned.

"Looks like you were able to make it," she started with a happy lilt to her tone.

"Yeah," Kane nodded whilst shoving his hands into his pockets, smirking slightly. "I mean, I'd be a little offended if we weren't invited." When (Y/N) gave him a smirk, he chuckled before then glancing around the lodge, uttering, "And, wow. Your soon-to-be stepdad really didn't hold back any expenses, huh? This place is nice. Maybe I was wrong and he isn't an asshole."

"Hey, quiet down," (Y/N) scoffed with an incredulous smile. "He's right over there."

Kane followed the directed where (Y/N) jerked her head to, slightly jolting in surprise when finding Devon staring at him already. His expression was flat, his eyes void of any emotion that made his emerald eyes look as cold and as sharp as a knife. Blinking rapidly and shaking his head, Kane flicked his gaze back to Devon momentarily, bewildered when finding that he was no longer looking at him, instead smiling as he chatted with another couple. Slightly unnerved, Kane turned his back to Devon as he continued to talk with (Y/N).

This was a mistake.

For as soon as Kane was no longer looking in his direction, Devon's gaze returned.

His jaw tightened the longer he observed the way Kane and (Y/N) spoke with one another, their closeness evident from how they not seemed to mind how close they stood next to each other, nor how they occasionally brushed hands. It was excruciating torture to Devon to just stand there, his arm around Katherine, instead of storming towards the two youths so he could rip them apart.

It was a violent instinct.

A not so surprising one at that, considering the usually dark path his mind seemed to stray down whenever the situation concerned (Y/N).

It was troubling.

Dangerous.

Absolutely jeopardizing.

Yet, it seemed as if the more he tried to squash these feelings down, they just came roaring back up—almost like they had a life of their own. A twisted life that just didn't seem to want to die. Letting out a slow breath through his nose, Devon forced his eyes away from (Y/N) and Kane, turning back to the couple in front of him with a charming smile that hid the writhing, pitch mass inside of him.

He slid a hand into his pocket, allowing the fabric to hide how his fingers curled into a tight fist.

He wished to sock it across Kane'a jaw.

However, he refrained.

He forced himself to stay put.

And stay put he did, no matter how much it tore him up on the inside. After all, he knew only giving in to the temptation of hurting Kane would only flush his future down the toilet.

He couldn't have that.

He'd rather die than ever not have that.
