H A N N II woke up in severe pain—not the sharp kind that pierces, but the dull, numbing kind that spread through my entire body.
Everything was blurry, cold, and unfamiliar. I couldn’t remember how I got here.
I tried to move, to speak, but nothing responded except my eyes, which wandered aimlessly around the room.
I took a shaky breath, struggling to recall what had happened. Just as I began to panic, I felt something warm—a hand loosely holding mine. My heart raced as I blinked, trying to focus.
The clinical smell of medicine and metal filled the air, and the rhythmic beeping of a monitor quickened. Was that my heartbeat?
The grip on my hand tightened suddenly, and I sensed someone standing up beside me.
Then, like a wave crashing down, it hit me. My baby.
I jolted in panic, trying to sit up, my chest tightening as the beeping quickened into an urgent, erratic sound. Words echoed around me, but they felt distant and impossible to understand.
My breath grew faster, chest heaving as I tried to speak, to call for help. I turned to the side, desperate for answers—and there she was.
Minji.
Everything rushed back in a flash—the bleeding, the frantic call for help, the blurry images of her driving me to the hospital.
"Minji?" My voice was barely above a whisper, raw and weak.
Her eyes widened. "Y-yes?" Her voice trembled, her hand slipping slightly from mine as she stuttered, "Shit, I should get the doctor—"
"No." I managed to say, my voice hoarse but urgent.
Minji stopped, nodding as she held my cold hand tighter, grounding me from the storm of panic swirling inside me. Her presence, solid and warm, was the only thing keeping me from breaking down entirely.
Tears blurred my vision, and I felt the sharp sting of fear deep in my chest. "The baby…" My voice cracked as the words left my mouth. "Is the baby—?"
Minji nodded fervently, her hands quickly wiping away the tears I hadn’t realized were streaming down my face.
"The baby is okay," she whispered, her voice soft but full of conviction.
"I told you I wouldn’t let anything happen. You’re both okay." She pressed a kiss to the top of my head, her own face a mess of exhaustion—tear-streaked cheeks, disheveled hair, and wrinkled clothes.
"I’ll tell you everything when you’re feeling better," she said gently, her thumb caressing my hand. "You did an amazing job calling me when you did. If we had been even a few minutes late, it could have been so much worse."
A wave of relief washed over me, and I leaned back into the bed, letting out a shaky breath. The pain was still there, but it felt distant, manageable.
Minji’s tone shifted slightly, more serious now. "Han," she began carefully, "I need you to be honest with me. Did anything happen recently? Anything, no matter how small?"
I looked up at her, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Any fall, any injury. You were already in a sensitive stage, and even something small could’ve caused the placental abruption." Her voice was gentle, but there was an edge of urgency.
I swallowed, my mind racing back to two days ago. Could it have been…?
"I—yeah, I did fall," I finally admitted, my voice barely a whisper. "But it was two days ago. I didn’t think it was that serious."
