"You know, I could always just head over to my parents’ place instead. They live in Daegu too, remember?" Hanni urged, halting me right before I rang the doorbell to my parents’ house.

I shot her a look. She’d been like this the entire day—nervous about meeting my parents. At first, I found it endearing, but now I could see how serious she was about it.

Taking her hand in mine, I gave it a reassuring squeeze. "Relax, Hanni. Mom knows you’re coming. She’s probably more excited to meet you than she is to see me."

"You don’t get it, Minji. You’re dating a pregnant woman who’s still legally married—oh, and conveniently your ex, the one who left you. How are you going to explain that to your parents and make it sound good?" Hanni snapped.

Before I could reply, the door clicked open, and my mother appeared, smiling at the sight of us.

Hanni’s hand slipped from mine, and she instantly plastered on a polite smile, bowing to my mom.

"Hello, sweetie! How was the trip?" my mom greeted her warmly, pulling her into a hug. I could see Hanni’s nerves visibly ease as she relaxed in my mother’s embrace.

"It was great, thank you for having me over, Mrs. Kim," Hanni responded, bowing again as she stepped back from the hug.

Mom’s smile widened. "Oh no, I’m the one who’s thankful. Thank you for coming, sweetheart." She turned to me next, pulling me into a hug, and I could feel her patting my back gently. “Look at you! You’re glowing. I’m so happy to see you like this.”

She gave me an approving nod, briefly glancing at Hanni, who hadn’t noticed, and mouthed a subtle “Good job.” I couldn’t help but grin back at her proudly as I took Hanni’s hand again, following Mom inside the house.

Walking in, I took a moment to soak in the memories. Everything looked the same as I remembered. This was the house I grew up in, where I’d experienced some of my biggest milestones.

Hanni had been here once before, five years ago, when we both came to visit our parents. Back then, she’d ended up fighting with hers and stayed over with us for the night. I hadn’t forgotten that night. She had trusted me, even if it was just as a friend, she let me comfort her.

"Oh, and you two are staying the night, right? I’d be so sad if you didn’t," Mom asked, retrieving her apron from the kitchen counter as we stopped near the doorway.

I glanced at Hanni, who was fidgeting with her sleeve, staring at the floor. Her grip on my hand was tight.

"Yeah, sure," I replied, unsure if that’s what Hanni wanted, but she didn’t object.

"Perfect! You both must be tired from the long car ride. I cleaned up your room for you, Bear," Mom said with a smile. "Take some time to rest. Your dad and Mingyu will be home before dinner. I’ll call you both down later."

I nodded, leading Hanni out of the kitchen as we headed towards my old room. I heard her let out a soft sigh of relief, and I turned to her.

"It’ll be okay," I assured her. She pursed her lips as if holding back something she wanted to say but decided against it. I didn’t push, letting the moment pass as we approached my room.

The door was still the same shade of green it had been for years. I really should ask them to repaint it to white. We walked in and turned on the lights, I took in the unchanged details.

Hanni looked around the room, her eyes lingering on everything. "You’ve seen this room before. Why do you seem so surprised?"

"It’s still the same," Hanni said quietly, moving towards my bookshelf. "Everything’s still the same."
