KATHY BATES sits at her vanity, nervously fidgeting with her engagement ring. Her best friend, STACY MATTHEWS, stands behind her, working on her hair as Kathy is still in her dressing gown.

STACY MATTHEWS
(adjusting a curl)
Stop fidgeting, Kath. You're going to look absolutely gorgeous like a princess, I've never failed a wedding look yet.

KATHY BATES
(smiling nervously)
Thanks, Stace. I just want everything to be perfect. I just can't believe today's finally here.

STACY MATTHEWS
It will be. Jeff's been going on about how Oliver's been driving him crazy with all the preparations.

KATHY BATES
(laughing)
Sounds like my Oliver. Oh God, I hope it's not too embarrassing.

The door opens, and CAROLINE BATES, Kathy's mother, peeks in.

CAROLINE BATES
How's it going in here, girls?

STACY MATTHEWS
Almost done, Mrs. Bates. Just a few more touches to the hair, and she'll be the belle of the ball.

CAROLINE BATES
(to Kathy)
Your father's pacing downstairs. I think he's more nervous than you are. He's pretending to be calm, but I caught him practising walking you down the aisle in the hallway he wasn't this focused at our wedding.

KATHY BATES
(rolling her eyes affectionately)
That's Dad for you.

They all share a laugh. Caroline enters fully, carrying a small box.

CAROLINE (CONT'D)
I brought you something old and blue.

She opens the box to reveal a delicate sapphire hairpin.

KATHY
(touched)
Oh, Mom... it's beautiful.

Stacy carefully pins it into Kathy's hair.

CAROLINE BATES
(hesitating)
Sweetheart, about Andrew...

KATHY BATES
(tensing)
Mom, please. Not today.

CAROLINE BATES
I know, I know. It's just... are you sure about not inviting him?

KATHY BATES
(firmly)
Yes, Mom. After what he did to Oliver, trying to get him sent to prison... He's not welcome here.

STACY MATTHEWS
(supportively)
You made the right call, Kath. No one needs that kind of drama on their wedding day.

KATHY BATES
(sighing)
I know. It's just... I remember when Andrew and I were together. He wasn't always like this.

CAROLINE BATES
People change, dear. Not always for the better.

KATHY BATES
(nodding)
You're right. I defended him for too long. Oliver and I both agreed - no Andrew.

CAROLINE BATES
Well, good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. Oliver is the future, the man who truly naturally cares for you.

STACY MATTHEWS
(stepping back to admire her work)
And... done! Kathy, you look absolutely stunning.

KATHY BATES
(nodding)
You're right. Oliver's my future now. Speaking of, how are Malcolm and Rhiannon doing?

CAROLINE BATES
(chuckling)
Those two? They're downstairs with Oliver, probably planning some elaborate prank for the reception. But i think by the time today is through that Oliver will need a new carpet.

KATHY BATES
(laughing)
God, those three. Sometimes, I think Oliver's marrying them, too.

STACY MATTHEWS
(finishing up Kathy's hair)
There! All done. Ready to take a look?

Kathy turns to the mirror, gasping at her reflection.

KATHY BATES
(emotional)
Oh, Stacy... it's perfect.

CAROLINE BATES
(tearing up)
You look beautiful, sweetheart.

KATHY BATES
(standing, taking a deep breath)
Okay. I'm ready. Let's do this, i may need assistance getting into my dress doing it from the back.
