audralee As I prepare to bring a human into this world in the next few weeks, I wanted to be transparent with you guys about this experience. These last few months I have had a heightened sense of self-awareness. (thanks anxiety). As someone who struggles with self-esteem while living in a society that focuses on capitalistic beauty standards, feeling comfortable with my body changing so drastically has been a little hard ngl. I'm blessed to have someone who can appreciate my body in its most vulnerable state. But even his words of affirmation don't work all the time. (sorry babe). And my mind goes to all the women who don't have the luxury of someone telling them they're beautiful and loving them in spite of.

It's also kinda hard to feel entirely relaxed because of the bipoc maternal health crisis in this country. Let's get into it. BIPOC women are 3-4 times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause. Now there are many factors that can contribute to this, but let's not turn a blind eye to the implicit bias and health care barrier set in place that heavily cause this. I know I'm in a position to provide extra protection for my child, but again... my heart breaks for the countless women who don't have that luxury.

so now what? idek to be honest. but the next time you see a pregnant woman, do something nice for her. reassure her. she may be going through it. i'll start: you are beautiful. you are loved. you are seen.

user2:: this made me tear up a little. my mom got infected and passed away after she had my brother and I because of medical negligence. What made it worse was the fact that the doctor said she was black and should've been able to handle it! The one who was supposed to keep her safe said that! thank you for sharing this and being aware!
