It was the middle of the night, and you couldn't sleep. You could hear Papyrus snoring away soundly, eager to get back to work tomorrow after so long of being on the run, and last you checked, the boys were also fast asleep. You leaned into the couch with a silent sigh. You should be with Papyrus, in bed, cuddled into him. Why weren't you? That was a pretty easy answer. The barrier. Tomorrow, you were supposed to go with Papyrus to this Royal Council meeting with Astigma to discuss the barrier now that nobody's souls were going to be taken. You were terrified that the king would change his mind and take your soul, or worse, Astigma's to open the barrier. You couldn't give two shits about the man had given you Astigma, but that boy was yours... Papyrus raised him, and he called Papyrus dad. Asgore couldn't take him away. "Mom?" You snapped out of your thoughts and looked up to see the precise child you'd been thinking about. "Stigy? What are you still doing up? You should be in bed-" Astigma scowled at the nickname but started to come down. "I couldn't sleep..."

Astigma cuddled into your lap, and you couldn't deny that having him close helped you to feel better. Still... "What's keeping you up, kiddo?" You asked as you cuddled him. Astigma gave a contemplative frown and sighed. "The barrier... I wanted Anton and dad and uncle and Granny to see the surface. The others too. But..." He huffed. "So not cool..." He grumbled as he planted his face into your side. "Yeah, the effort was there, even if you are grounded till the end of days." You narrowed your [E/C] eyes at him, and he chuckled nervously. "I'm sorry." You sighed and rubbed his back. "I appreciate it and accept your apology... you're still grounded, though." He complained quietly, trying not to wake Papyrus who, despite sleeping like a damn log, had the hearing of a fucking bat when it came to bedtime. You settled back to help try and get him to sleep. "We will get the whole barrier thing figured out tomorrow, don't you worry, Astigma..." You promised him softly. The boy nodded into you as sleep started to weigh down on him again. You started to hum a soft lullaby, despite his insistence that he was too old for one, and he drifted off.

You became acutely aware that the snoring had stopped. Papyrus was awake, but you couldn’t find it in you to move. Not with the away Astigma was sleeping on you. You looked over at the stairs as Papyrus made a slow and purposefully quiet descent down, as he regarded you and Astigma carefully. "Couldn't sleep." You muttered as not to wake the child. Papyrus nodded and sat beside you. "It Is A Big Day Tomorrow. I Cannot Blame You For Being Worried." He leaned in and gave you a kiss. "I don't want Asgore to change his mind..." You whispered, but Papyrus kissed you again, halting your fears. "I Will Not Let That Happen... You And Stigy Are Safe With Me..." You smiled into the kiss and wrapped your arms around him. "That's good to hear, but I never doubted you..." No, you feared that Papyrus wouldn't be able to be strong enough to defeat someone like the king. You weren't going to tell him that, though... he probably was already thinking the same. "I Will Put Him To Bed... Meet You Upstairs?" You nodded, giving him another kiss as he started to pick Astigma up carefully and bring him back to his room.
