37 | VOICE THAT COMES BACK
THE night before the big dance had arrived, and everybody couldn't wait for it to be it already. It was an hour before curfew, and that chatter was hearable around the halls.
All it was talked about was the dresses and makeup looks the girls would be doing. Inside Jane and Cassia's room, the two only rolled their eyes and laughed at the muffled voices of the rest of the girls around their hall.
Since their doors were opened it was audible enough.
"Can't they shut up already?" Jane giggled, slamming a baby blue pillow to her face. A low scream muffling into it.
"Nope, they cannot." The brunette chuckled at her friend's action. "I wonder how long it will take them to just go to sleep to kill time."
"Never, probably." Answered Jane in a muffled tone.
But Cassia couldn't blame them, she herself found it exciting that the day was arriving. She couldn't wait to see Harry's dancing skills, and just to see him in general. But as much as excited she was, she also couldn't stop feeling on edge.
Her powers were still acting up, and up till now, there was still no answer. She had managed to keep them under control, but even now, the jitters would tense up here and there. As if they were telling her something, but what?
She thought maybe going on a walk would distract her. Or maybe calm her down, since it was nighttime after all. And if she wanted to, she needed to go before curfew hit and it was too late.
"Hey, Jane, I'll be back. I'm gonna go for a walk." The brunette turned to her raven-haired friend.
"Oh, sure. Are you okay?" It was rare for Cassia to go on walks in the middle of the night.
Nodding, Cassia answered, "Yeah, just need fresh air, and peace of mind from all this." She motioned around the room, meaning the girls.
Which wasn't completely a lie. Too much of the girls chattering wasn't helping her much.
Upon Jane smiling with a nod, Cassia grabbed a sweater putting it on before she exited the room. The voices of the girls became more audible after stepping out, and as she walked they turned faint when she began to walk away.
The lobby had students sitting on the couches, but not a lot. The doors were opened allowing the breeze to go in, and it made Cassia release a breath from it. She heard the crickets when she stepped outside, the moonlight giving her light.
The small rocks that cracked under her steps filled her ears and somehow gave her satisfaction. But soon enough she looked down at her steps and the ice began to crystallize.
She clicked her tongue annoyed. "Come on, not again." She picked up her pace, but it only left a trail of where she walked.
Upon looking down at her feet, she watched her powers calm down, but hearing a small sound only made her look up. Looking around made her turn around in circles.
Her feet stayed close to each other with every turn that she did. The leaves swished from the wind, but it was a strong current. That's when she caught sight of a shadow or a cape.
"Who's there?" Cassia called, standing in the middle with her feet now apart. "Hey Mal if it's you just come out, you know I hate it when you pull pranks on me."
Expecting to hear Mal, Cassia walked closer but her feet halted when she realized it wasn't Mal at all.
"It's not Mal." A voice whispered in her ear. Sending her chills. "I am coming for you, Cassia."
The voice. It was back. The brunette didn't hesitate to question right away.
"Who are you? And what do you want from me?" She thought it had gone away, but now it was back. What did it want?
"You'll know... very soon. Just know that I found your breaking point, Cassie." For one last time, it whispered before it was gone.
It left the brunette standing confused, her head still turned in all directions to see if she could catch the shadow. But it was gone in an instant. Her eyes looked down at her feet, catching that there was no frost under her, thankfully.
"Maybe I should just go back." She raised her brows with a small tilt of the head.
She picked up her feet and walked back to where she came from. Not without constantly checking behind her to see if she could find anything or that shadow behind her. But every time she would turn it was dark, only with the dimmed light from the moon.
She was starting to think about telling Salos but something told her not to at the same time. Because she knew he would end up telling her father or the wizard himself would do something about it. And she didn't want them both to get involved.
So maybe scratch that one out.
It left the brunette thinking as to what the voice meant with breaking point, and also of how it called her the nickname only Harry did.
It had to have eyes on her all the time for it to know. Questions after questions.
With being back in the lobby Cassia felt a little safe, and she walked up the stairs into her dorm. But even now, she still felt a little jittery. She wasn't sure when that would go away, or if it would ever leave at some point. Maybe never.
She realized the halls were quiet, indicating the girls had gone to sleep, or they got tired of talking about Homecoming. Which was maybe the first option because they needed beauty sleep.
Cassia opened the door to her dorm. Finding Jane with the TV on she offered her a smile, one that the girl returned before she spoke.
"They managed to stop the chattering." Fell as a chuckle, pointing with the remote.
"Yeah," Cassia released a breathy laugh when removing her sweater and lying back in her bed.
Her eyes guided over toward the TV paying attention to what Jane was watching. Coraline. Oh yeah, because Halloween was coming along. Getting into the spirit.
Her attention got caught up in the movie as her hand reached for a pillow and used it to lay her head on it. Her knees reached over to her stomach as she hugged them, keeping the pillow under her head.
But even before it reached half the movie, Cassia's eyes began to get heavy. Constantly trying to keep them open only made her even more tired. And soon enough a wave of sleep took her in, her eyes closing and a world of black taking her into sleep.
