From the moment I first laid eyes on Captain Rex, it was like the galaxy around me dimmed, and he was the only thing in focus. "Stood out" is an understatement—my crush on Anakin's captain was practically a supernova. Those big brown eyes, that striking blonde hair—Force, he was so... ugh. I couldn't even put it into words without my heart racing.
I first met him at the very start of the Clone Wars. Having been friends with Anakin and Ahsoka for a long time—thanks to Master Kenobi and my master, Quinlan Vos being friends—I was allowed to go on missions with them. This had gotten me used to the chaos of the Jedi and the clones. Quinlan often brought me along on his missions, or would let me help out on my friends ones, and the war didn't change that one bit. The day I met Rex was shaping up to be pretty normal. Hangar deck 56 on Coruscant, looking around for Ahsoka.
The moment I spotted Rex, my breath hitched. He was overseeing preparations, commanding attention without even trying. Sure, I thought clones were hot—who wouldn't? And sure, being a leader was his job. But there was something about Rex that made me weak in the knees. His confidence, the way he carried himself, even the little smirk he wore while giving orders—ugh, it made my heart do somersaults.
I remember the way he turned to me, those big brown eyes locking onto mine, and I could swear the world around us faded. "Commander Y/N! You're General Vos' student, right?" he asked, his voice smooth and warm.
"Yep!" was all I managed, suddenly all too aware of how I was probably blushing. "I'm just here to uhm, I mean my Master lets me stay with Ani and Ahsoka so..." I cringed inwardly. Great, real smooth.
Rex chuckled, and I felt like I was floating. "Well, we could use all the help we can get. Just watch yourself out there. It can get a bit hectic."
"I am a Jedi," I retorted, emphasising the 'am' and regaining some confidence, even as my heart raced. The captain looked me up and down, obviously catching a glimpse of my padawan braid.
"Padawan," he corrected with a playful smile.
I had fallen even deeper into my crush the first time we were in a dropship together. As we squeezed into the dropship, I felt a thrill of excitement. Rex was right next to me, head high, jaw set, and a very slight confident smirk at play on his lips. I tried to focus on our mission, but it was impossible not to steal glances at him.
"Hey, you ready?" he asked, flashing that gentle yet confident smile that always made my heart skip.
"I've been training my whole life for this sort of thing," I shot back, smirking. "No pressure, right?"
He laughed, and I swear my heart did a little dance. "Haven't we all."
Just as the dropship jolted off the ground, I reached for the handle—way too high for me. "Ugh, these handles are designed for clones," I mumbled a complaint, trying to find a better grip.
Suddenly, the ship hit a patch of turbulence, and I almost went flying into the wall. Before I could even process it, Rex's strong hand was at my waist, pulling me back against him.
"You good?" he asked, a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Yeah, all good. Thank you," I replied, my cheeks flushing. I felt safe, and a little giddy, nestled against his side.
"Just doing my job," he said, his tone playful. "I was told you'd be difficult to keep on the ground."
I shot him a sideways glance, feeling bold. "You think I'm that reckless? I'll take it as a compliment."
"Definitely. You keep things interesting," he replied, the corners of his mouth lifting into that charming smile.
As the dropship continued its descent, I leaned into him, enjoying his warmth. "So, what do you think we'll find down there?"
