I wanted to say before-hand that I am NOT experienced with tourettes ! Excuse me if I made mistakes or misinformations <3
Jeon Jungkook had always been good at masking the parts of himself that didn't fit the image he thought others wanted to see. From a young age, he knew that being the youngest in the group meant that he had to prove himself—over and over again—to show that he was just as capable as his hyungs. He worked the hardest, stayed the longest at practice, and he mastered each new skill thrown his way with a determination that seemed almost superhuman.
But there was one thing Jungkook couldn't simply out-train, couldn't push away no matter how much he tried. It was a part of him that he had carried since childhood: his Tourette's syndrome. The tics had always been there, small at first, almost imperceptible—a blink here, a twitch there. When he was younger, it was easier to ignore, easier to convince himself that it was nothing. And even as it progressed, he still found ways to hide it.
At first, the tics were only noticeable in the privacy of his room. Late at night, when everyone else was asleep, Jungkook would let the energy run its course, allowing his shoulders to twitch and his neck to jerk freely. He had developed a rhythm: suppressing it during the day, holding it all in, then releasing the tension when no one was around. The strain of keeping it all inside was draining, but to Jungkook, it was worth it. He couldn't bear the idea of his hyungs seeing him lose control like that.
But as the group's success grew, so did the pressure. BTS was on top of the world, and that meant expectations were higher than ever. Endless interviews, fan events, and rehearsals filled their days, and every moment was documented. Cameras were always around—during their concerts, their variety shows, even during what was supposed to be their downtime. The weight of that constant scrutiny felt like it was suffocating Jungkook. He had no choice but to suppress the tics, always.
Things started getting worse just a few months before the world tour. The first sign was when he started feeling the tics creeping up during the day, rather than just at night. A twitch of his neck in the middle of an interview, a grunt that he had to disguise as a cough while the cameras were rolling. He'd been able to hide it, mostly—taking deep breaths, clenching his jaw, anything to suppress the urges. But it was exhausting.
One evening, they were filming a run-through of a choreography piece for "Black Swan," and Jungkook could feel the familiar tension building. His muscles felt tight, the need to move becoming unbearable. He was supposed to glide smoothly, but his foot caught slightly as his shoulder gave a sharp jerk. He recovered quickly, masking it as a misstep, but his heart raced. He could feel the other members glance at him, but no one said anything. He told himself he just needed to try harder.
The tics began to escalate from there. What used to be an occasional twitch was becoming more frequent—his head snapping to the side, his hands twitching of their own accord. The vocal tics were getting worse, too, and those were the hardest to hide. A small grunt, an involuntary hum, even a muttered curse. It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep quiet, and the more he tried to suppress it, the stronger the urges seemed to become.
