ALPHA SAMSON

Jenson and I left the office, leaving Oliver to review the documents. He mentioned he would stay until tomorrow, which meant he would sleep on the couch in the office. He has done this many times before when I have asked him to do some research for me.

We let our wolves take over and sprint off into the forest line.

Both wolves run, zipping in and around trees.

While Savage was running, I moved back to let him be a wolf. It was hard to do anything you wanted when someone constantly overlooked everything you did, especially when they had four legs and a worse attitude than you.

"Hey, I heard that!" Savage grumbled, which only made me smirk.

"I don't have the worst attitude. I'm a wolf. I am strong and alpha. I'm going to be more pissed off than you."

I said nothing and moved closer when a mind link came from Jenson. "We are going to head back and sleep. Ava mind-linked me, saying that Alora was asleep and that she was about to sleep, too. I will head back and see her before she does, then back to our room."

I knew he wouldn't want to leave her without seeing her. "Okay. Savage and I will keep going till the big guy gets more energy out of him."

"Sure thing," he said, closing the mind link.

"You know we should do the same," Savage muttered, making me move back until I met his eyes. "We could see mate before we go to bed."

There was no point in arguing with him. I wanted to see her too.

Savage ran around the forest until he stopped to get water from the lake. He had run the entire length of the territory. He usually did this when he needed to blow off steam, which was the case now. Once he had finished drinking, he sat down for a while until he moved again.

We weren't even tired. But we headed back to the pack house.

It was utterly silent when Savage pushed me forward and let me retake control. Grabbing the clothes I had left on the steps, I quickly dressed and headed to our bedroom, where Alora was sleeping.

Stepping closer to the door, I slowly opened it and appeared around it to find Ava staring at Alora. Her gaze met mine and widened. "What are you doing here?" she whispered, standing up and moving toward me.

My eyes went to the frame of the bed.

Alora looked small, her legs scrunched up to her stomach. My eyes scanned over her till they met with two green eyes staring back.

That damn cat.

It didn't move, but his eyes bore back into mine like it was searching for my soul.

"Creepy little thing," Savage muttered, coming a little closer but not too close for him to scare the little fur ball.

"Step inside," Ava whispered. "I don't want Nala to escape."

Stepping further inside, I looked at her, confused. What the hell was a Nala?

"Nala?"

Ava motioned to the cat. "Nala is the cat. Alora named her."

I said nothing and looked back at the sleeping beauty. She was silently snoring. "How is she?" I asked, not taking my eyes off her.

Ava said nothing momentarily, which made me look back at her, concerned. Something was up. "What?"

Ava pressed her finger to her lips, which made me realize I was talking a little louder than I should. As much as I wanted Alora to know I was here, this wasn't how I wanted her to meet me. Not in her, at least.

"She's okay. It's just—" She stopped what she was saying and looked toward Alora to make sure she wasn't awake.

I listened to Alora's heart rate, but it was even like she was asleep, even though it was a little hard to figure out what her heartbeat was to the damn furballs.

My eyes stayed on Ava until she sighed and moved me toward the bathroom door. We walked inside until she closed it.

This was all getting weird.

Ava looked at me sheepishly. "I didn't want her to know I told you without breaking her confidence."

I said nothing, only giving her a nod.

"Alora wanted to know why Jenson wanted to see me, which I explained he was my mate. She didn't give me much detail if she knew about mates, only that Madaline was the one who gave her a brief introduction to it, which we both know what that meant."

A low growl rumbled through me to the image that played in my head of the state Alora was in when we found her in that cell.

"She told me her mum only told her a brief account for a child."

That was understandable. Her mum probably thought she had time, which wasn't the case.

"Somehow, the topic went onto her mum and her trying for another baby with Alpha Karl." Now, that got my attention. Why would Alora bring that up?

Ava told me what she said, which broke my heart for her and her mum. Why would a man ever act like that, their mate? Only wanting one sex to rule was sexist, even in my eyes. I may be all for the rules, but where does it state women can't rule or aren't fit enough to lead?

In my eyes, women are to be cherished and looked after, but they have the same right to what we have as anyone else. Hell, women give birth and bring new life into this world, but to only pass it to the sons is all kinds of wrong.

My eyes stayed on Ava, who was now crying. It looked like she had held these tears in while Alora cried hers. "I couldn't cry with her. It was her story and emotion to bear. I felt hurt about what happened to our luna and even her. She was just a child."

I said nothing. Her pain was all I could sense, which was also not helping Savage and me.

Clearing my throat, I placed my hand on top of hers. "Be with your mate," I said. "He can help soothe you and even be with you."

Ava shook her head. "I promised Alora I would be here when she woke up and—"

"You can come back early and even bring her breakfast," I said with a small smile. "I will stay with her and keep an eye on her."

Ava stared at me and looked at the door. "If you are sure—"

"I am. I need to be close to her. She calms me and Savage down."

"She would since she's your mate." Ava smiled.

We stood there for a few awkward seconds before she moved to the bathroom door. She looked at me and smiled. "I will be here with breakfast. Are you staying the night with her?"

Her voice went into a whisper as we both stepped outside. "Yeah," I murmured. "But will be gone before you come here."

Ava nodded and headed to the door, stopping and looking at Alora. My eyes went to where she was looking.

Alora's scent wafted toward me, instantly calming me and Savage down.

All I wanted to do was to be here with her.

Ava left as I headed over to the chair she was sitting on when I got there. My eyes never left Alora.

Movement came, and I looked up to see Nala coming toward me. She plopped down between Alora's hand and where mine was resting. She laid in between us and nestled back into Alora.

There was no way I could hold Alora's hand, but I gave the cat a little smooth on her head, which made her purr slightly.

Leaning back in the chair, I watched Alora till I felt my eyes droop and send me into darkness. I looked toward Savage, who was now already sleeping in my head.

I felt calm; I only wanted to stay quiet with my mate.
