"there's no story if there isn't some conflict. the memorable things are usually not how pulled together everybody is. i think everybody feels lonely and trapped sometimes. i would think it's more or less the norm." wes anderson

[takes place somewhere between season ten - prime empire]
oneshot synopsis: lloyd and kai are looking for a lost man in a canyon, right in the middle of the hottest summer recorded in ninjago.
—————————
The midday sun blazed mercilessly over the desert, its relentless rays smothering the canyon in waves of heat that shimmered like glitter above the sand. Not even the faintest gust of wind stirred, leaving nothing to break the suffocating stillness. The arid landscape stretched endlessly, barren and unforgiving, offering no refuge—no shade, no mercy—beneath the punishing light.
Lloyd and Kai trekked across the rocky expanse. Each step stirred dust from the ground, sandy particles clinging to their skin and clothing, only adding to their discomfort.
"Remind me again why we're out here?" Kai asked, voice sharp with irritation as he lifted a hand to shield his eyes from the glare. His tone was casual, but there was an edge to it, a bite softened only by exhaustion.
"Because," Lloyd muttered, his words clipped with annoyance, "some goofy archeologist thought it was a good idea to chase a theory into the middle of nowhere—and got himself lost."
Kai exhaled in exasperation, swiping a bead of sweat before it stung his eyes. "And of course we're the ones that Master Wu sends after him."
"Oh, I don't know," Lloyd shot back, sarcasm curling in his voice. "Maybe something to do with being the heroes of Ninjago? That whole duty-to-protect thing? Ring a bell?"
Kai gave a half-hearted grumble in response, but inwardly, he knew Lloyd was right. Responsibility came with the gi, no matter how ridiculous the circumstances.
They pressed on in silence for a time, the crunch of gravel and sand beneath their boots the only sound in the desert. The heat seemed to intensify with each step, pressing down on them like a heavy hand. Kai felt it sapping at his strength, leaving his mouth dry and his limbs heavy. Finally, he pulled a flask from his pack and drank deeply, the cool water a fleeting reprieve. He offered it to Lloyd. "Want some?"
Lloyd waved it away. "I'm fine." Kai frowned. "You sure? It's hotter than the boiler room in Jamanakai Village out here." But Lloyd only shrugged, his face unreadable beneath the sweat and dust. "Really. I can handle it."
