The towering trees create a lush canopy above our heads. As the sun's rays peek through the foliage above, it creates a dappling of the moss-carpeted floor with sunlight. Everyone stands beside me in anticipation for the event to start, barely making a sound as we wait for something to happen. I glance down to idly fiddle with the bracelet Gojo gave me. The thought of it still makes my heart warm up, a smile threatening to form on my face.
No. I need to focus.
Suddenly a familiar voice rings out, cutting through the silence of the forest and bouncing off the surrounding trees.
"We'll be starting the event in one minute!" Gojo bellows. If I wasn't so nervous right now, I'd be laughing at his spirited voice. "But before we begin, let's hear a few words of well-appreciated encouragement! From the always eloquent Utahime Iori!!
"U-uh...although during this event, some degree of injury will be unavoidable, you should...uh...um...help each other out...? Or...something? If you...can?" The woman stumbles over her words, clearly not prepared to be put on the spot like that.
"Okay sorry times up!" Gojo interrupts her abruptly.
"Ugh! Gojo, you jerk! I wasn't done!"
"Now, let the sister school exchange event....BEGINNNN!!!"
As Gojo yells for the event to start, everyone around me immediately breaks into a sprint farther into the forest. I hesitate a moment before taking off after them. I tighten the belt that holds my katana to make sure it doesn't come a loose from the sudden physical activity.
I notice I'm slightly lagging behind the group, obviously the weakest link. I'm already panting from the run, and my short, black hair whips against my face from the wind. I push it out of my face as I try to focus on keeping up.
"Where do you think the curse spirit boss is?" Yuuji questions from the front of the group.
"It was probably unleashed at the midpoint between the two groups. But we can't expect it to stand still." Panda calls back, keeping his gaze ahead.
"At the prearranged time, we'll all split into the Megumi squad and the Panda squad. After that, it's on you. Got it, Yuuji?" Maki adds.
"Got it!" He gives her a thumbs up.
Megumi's black wolf-like curse trails ahead of us, most likely looking out for potential danger. That makes me feel slightly better, I guess.
Suddenly, I feel something barreling into me from my right. The force of the hit made me fly several feet, skidding against the ground until eventually landing horizontally against a thick tree. I let out a silent scream in pain as all the air was knocked out of my lungs. All sound was muted momentarily except for the muffled yells from my teammates.
As I lay on the ground, the sounds begin to come back. I realize it's completely silent except for the sound of several footsteps retreating and birds chirping. I slowly get up despite the pain. My legs are still wobbly from the sudden hit. Once my vision clears completely, I gasp in surprise when I notice a familiar figure standing right in front of me.
It's the boy from the Kyoto team, the one with his eyes closed. He gives me an unreadable blank expression while holding what looks like a bow in one hand.
He doesn't say a word, just staring at me blankly. A shiver runs down my spine at that sight. Something about him is off-putting, and I instinctively take a small step back.
"Ugh..." I groan, my next words coming out in a slurred mumble. "What...are you doing...?"
"I could ask you the same question," the boy replies in a calm voice. He slowly begins moving closer. The way he walks is almost calculated, like he's analyzing every move I make. "You're the one with the power of curse manipulation."
