Chapter 17
The new Divination professor was Firenze, the centaur. For obvious reasons, they were given a new classroom on the main floor. As the Slytherins made their way to class Alexis' eyes drifted up to where she knew Trelawney was sitting all alone. She couldn't help but feel like taking this class was a betrayal to Trelawney. The other girls were giggling about how excited they were to have such an attractive teacher and she just rolled her eyes. Centaurs had little more than contempt for humans and all these ridiculous girls were drooling over him.
She didn't know what she was expecting walking into Firenze's class but it was not anything close to what she imagined. The classroom was a forest clearing at twilight. A soft moss covered the floor as trees rose to meet a bewitched ceiling showing the celestial bodies of the night sky. It was breathtaking, she stared around amazed at the accuracy of everything down to the placement of the stars in the sky.
Mattheo marveled at her ability to shut everything out as the other students asked the new professor embarrassing questions. She finally snapped back to reality hearing Firenze tell the students to lie down and observe the stars. "Nice finally a class I can take a nap in," Theo whispered as he settled down into the cushion of moss. Alexis elbowed him in the gut and his subsequent grunt earned them a disapproving glance from the centaur.
Firenze began his lesson about how the whole future of the world could be found within the art of star-seeing. One of the other girls desperate for attention started talking about how they had learned astrology from Professor Trelawney but was quickly embarrassed by the centaur when he told them all that astrology was essentially a joke. The Slytherins all did their best to stifle their laughter.
As Firenze continued his lesson setting their focus on the stars above. Alexis' vision began to blur slightly. The stars began to swirl and move, and a battle began acted out by the stars themselves. They became people fighting an unwinnable battle as a couple stood on the fringe watching everything unfold. The couple moved to one side and they began to prevail. The stars reset and the couple joined the opposite side and that side began to win, the battle ended similarly with the death of one main person but the difference was when the couple joined the side of the man destined to die, the couple took up his place. A waze of energy released from them and destroyed everyone in its path.
Alexis blinked in shock seeing the stars unmoving yet again and Firenze looking at her strangely. When the class finished and he released them, Alexis heard a deep voice from behind her, "Miss Alexis, would you stay a moment?" She looked around at her friends before her eyes met Mattheo's, she gave a small smile and nod letting them know she would be ok before turning back around. "Of course Professor."
The centaur waited until the last student had filed out before speaking to her. "You are a seer, I saw you reading the stars as I spoke. You saw the great war to come?" Alexis nodded slowly still reeling from what she had seen.
"I have heard the outcome cannot be seen, that there is a point at which no seer can see past. Did you see an outcome?" His eyes searched her face seeming to already know the answer but waiting to see how she would choose to respond. She could not hold his stare any longer as she stared at the moss-covered floor.
"Not exactly, I saw possible outcomes but nothing pointing to which was a more likely conclusion." She couldn't understand why she was being this forthcoming about what she had seen. She barely knew this teacher but somehow she felt safe sharing her knowledge with him. He nodded deep in contemplation, "I see, I would keep this knowledge to yourself young one. There are many who would seek to use someone with a power as formidable as yours. Do not allow yourself to become a pawn in their game."
He sent her on her way leaving her head spinning. She had originally believed that he had been the one to show that vision to the class. Knowing the vision had been hers, and hers alone felt like the weight of the world had been placed on her shoulders. She struggled to focus on anything else the rest of the day. Her friends tried to pull her out of her thoughts as did Mattheo but none were successful. After supper, she wandered off on her own not having a specific destination but ended up in the astronomy tower.
