Chapter 39

As the sun set Alexis once again held her wand to her heart and said the words. The group of Slytherins stayed in the library studying until almost curfew. As they headed back to the common room Draco wrapped an arm around her waist and she laid her head on his shoulder.

"You seem like you are taking this pretty hard darling. Are you sure you're okay?" Draco gave her a gentle squeeze as they walked down the long dark corridors.

"Katie being cursed is the first of the dark things coming this year. Everything is going to get worse going forward. I feel a dark cloud settling over Hogwarts and when the storm hits, nothing will ever be the same," As Alexis spoke the air around them felt colder. The dim hallway grew darker around them as Theo and Enzo looked at Draco. He kissed the top of her head as worry for her filled his chest.

Alexis lay awake long after Draco had fallen asleep, staring at the canopy over her bed. She missed the stars, she had spent most nights staring up at them as she fell asleep over the summer.

After hours of laying wide awake, she slipped out of bed and threw on her clothes. She quietly snuck out of the dungeons and out into the fresh fall air. She wandered down to the edge of the black lake and sunk her toes into the cold sand on the bank.

The breeze coming off the lake was frigid but cleared her mind and made her feel more alert. She had played a part in a sweet girl being cursed, she could feel the guilt eating away at her. She knew already the things she was going to have to accomplish were going to destroy a part of her she may never get back.

She already felt a small part of her soul turn black from this. She moved to where she could touch the water. She remembered back to her first night going up to the castle, she had felt drawn to these waters even then. As the stars were mirrored in the glassy surface of the lake she had run her fingers across the surface. She had been so sure she could touch the stars that night.

She missed that sweet excited girl she was, even a year ago when life hadn't been so complicated. Now to save everyone she had to sacrifice pieces of her soul to do it. But if it was between her and the people she loves she was going to choose herself every time.

She knew how worried her friends and Draco were and she was beginning to think they were right to be. She wasn't struggling with her anger as much but she felt something new building inside her. A constant tug to choose a more dangerous and chaotic path. She knew she should fight it but it felt good to give into it. That was why she felt so guilty for what happened to Katie, somewhere deep inside her was a twisted pleasure in what happened.

She pulled her legs up and hugged her knees to her chest. She sat there until then cold seeped into her bones before walking back to the common room. As she walked toward her room she saw a pair of scissors on one of the tables and had a crazy idea. She grabbed them and headed to the bathroom.

She stared at her reflection seeing a person who didn't reflect who she was anymore. A perfect daddy's girl who never stepped out of line and she couldn't take it anymore. She lifted the scissors and started to cut her hair shorter and shorter until her hair barely touched her chin.
