Early in the morning, I make my way toward the village. The sun slowly begins to creep over the horizon, while the salty scent of the sea permeates the air. Tsuki no Mura, the small coastal town, feels quiet and closed off. I am here alone, with no obvious signs that I am a kunoichi. My headband, my weapons—I've left them all behind. Only my mind, my skills, and the connection to Kitsune and Yako remain at my disposal.
"I can do this," I whisper to myself as I approach the first villager.
"We are always with you, Princess," I hear Kitsune's gentle voice in my mind. "Stay vigilant."
"I will," I respond softly, before setting to work.
With a friendly smile on my face, I begin asking the villagers of Tsuki no Mura about my supposedly "missing friends." "Excuse me, have you perhaps seen two young friends of mine? They've been missing for a few days, and I'm here to search for them."
As expected, the answers are sparse and evasive. Many villagers cast suspicious glances at me or offer vague, indifferent responses. Most claim to have seen or heard nothing, while some even avoid me as if my presence is unwelcome. But I remain persistent. Door by door, street by street.
"Yukari, stay focused," Itachi reminds me calmly through our connection via Kitsune. "It won't take long before they notice you're here."
"Don't worry," I reply. "I'll keep you updated."
I can feel the whole village is involved in these dark dealings in some way. The tension in the air grows thicker with each passing minute, and I can practically feel the eyes watching my back as I walk through the streets. It's a suffocating atmosphere, as if every villager knows what's happening but none dare speak a word.
"They're shutting me out," I say quietly in my thoughts. "I'm getting nowhere."
"Stay calm," Shisui chimes in. "We can't stay hidden forever. They will react soon."
Hours pass, and my body starts to feel the strain. The villagers remain stubborn, offering no information. I wonder how many of them are directly involved, and if they're all silent to protect themselves. The pressure weighs heavy on me, but I know giving up is not an option.
As the day slowly draws to a close and the sun begins to sink on the horizon, I feel the exhaustion setting in. My body wants to give up, but my mind keeps me alert. Just as I decide to return to camp and discuss the next step with Itachi and Shisui, I suddenly feel a sharp sting at the back of my neck.
My hand reflexively reaches for the spot, but my fingers find only empty air. A numbing pain spreads through my body, and before I can react, a paralyzing sensation courses through my limbs. My breath catches, and the ground beneath me seems to tilt. In my mind, I desperately try to call out to Kitsune.
"Kitsune..." But before I can fully connect, darkness overwhelms me.
I slowly regain consciousness. Before I even open my eyes, I feel the cold of the room against my skin. A musty, rotten smell of dampness and mold fills the air, as if I've been trapped deep underground in a wet dungeon. Soft whimpers and the sound of several people sobbing reaches my ears. "They've captured me as planned," flashes through my mind. But something is wrong. My thoughts are sluggish, clouded, as if a thick fog is clouding my mind. I try to gather myself mentally, reaching out to Kitsune in my mind, but the drug has blocked our connection. Confusion floods me. Kitsune and Yako... I can feel their worry, like a faint echo deep inside me. At least my emotions still reach them. "I hope they haven't interfered," I think, trying to signal through my emotions that everything is going according to plan. It's the only thing I can do right now.
Slowly, I open my eyes. The dim, weak light makes it difficult to make out the room. I see more than twenty children sitting in the same damp, dark cell as me, their eyes tired and hopeless. Their faces are etched with fear, hunger, and exhaustion. The walls around us seem to press in, as though they are witnesses to our suffering. No windows, no chance of escape. The air is thick, and each breath feels heavier than the last.
