I run.
Without pause, without direction—chasing nothing but the voice calling me through this endless darkness. My heart pounds, my legs move on their own, while everything around me fades... everything but that one familiar presence.
And then... I stand before him.
The emptiness around us shatters. Suddenly, we're there—back in our old home. The surroundings are so vivid, so familiar, it feels as if time itself has bent just to make this moment possible.
I can't comprehend what's happening. A genjutsu? Death? Something else entirely?
But it doesn't matter.
My mind asks—but my heart answers.
Without hesitation, I throw myself into his arms.
And when I feel his familiar warmth wrap around me, every barrier crumbles. Tears well up in my eyes—hot, unstoppable—I sob and laugh at the same time. Joy and pain blend into something indescribable, something so deep it almost crushes me.
I can hear his heartbeat. I can smell him—that familiar scent from my childhood. And I know:
This isn't a dream.
My brother...
Shisui...
He's here.
And in this moment, that's all that matters.
I cling to him as if he could slip away at any second. My fingers clutch at his clothes, my whole body trembles. I don't want to let go. Not again.
"I thought... I'd never see you again..." I whisper.
My voice is barely a breath, cracking under the weight of the years, under the weight of guilt.
Shisui's arms tighten around me. Warm. Steady. So familiar it hurts.
He doesn't speak—not right away. He just holds me, letting me cry, as my heart spills out everything it's held in for so long.
"I'm so sorry..." A sob tears through my throat. "I couldn't protect you... I was too weak... too late... I missed you so much, Shisui... Every damn day."
His hand gently runs over my back, soothing—just like he used to when I was scared as a child.
"Yukari..."
Just my name.
And yet in it, there's everything: understanding. Love. Forgiveness.
I pull back just a little, looking into his eyes—those eyes so familiar it steals my breath. And I know it's really him. Not a memory. Not a shadow.
"I never tried to summon you," I whisper, lowering my gaze. "I didn't dare. I was afraid of what you'd think... if you saw what I've become."
He smiles. Softly. Sadly. Proudly.
"I watched you every day," he says quietly. "Every single day. I saw you fall. And I saw you get back up."
I press my lips together. The tears won't stop.
"You kept fighting, Yukari. For others. For a village that cast you out. For a family that broke apart. And even when your heart shattered—you kept going."
I want to say something. But I can't.
Just a nod. A trembling of my lips I can't control.
"I'm proud of you," he says. "I always was."
And in that moment—for the first time since his death—a piece of the weight falls from my shoulders. Not all of it. But enough... to breathe again.
"But I still couldn't save you..." I whisper, my voice cracking.
