"Dad, Mom, you should eat too. Don't leave the table until you finish all the meat!"

Su Guan turned back to consider her parents, who felt very guilty. Since their daughter's arrival, they had been quite distant, but she was always thinking of them.

Though she was their own flesh and blood, the bond was not strong. Yue Yue had been raised by them for over a decade, and it was false to say there were no feelings there. Even if she was not their biological child, they treated her as if she were.

"Okay, Guan Guan, you eat too!" Mother Su actively served Su Guan some food.

"Thank you, Mom!"

She was well-raised by Madam Gu, polite and sweet-spoken. In contrast, they felt they hadn't raised someone else's daughter well, having lived a hard life for over a decade.

Su Guan naturally took a sweet potato and started eating.

"Eat the rice, sweet potatoes aren't as good!"

Mother Su hurriedly stopped her. They had specially steamed white rice for her, which was quite expensive in the market. Their family had limited land, just three acres in total, used for planting filling crops like potatoes, corn, and sweet potatoes. They only grew rice on two acres. During spring planting, they collected seeds from the village head.

Ancient farming was not like modern times, lacking various scientific methods and hybrid rice, so the yield was average. From two acres, they could harvest a maximum of 500 jin (about 250 kg) of rice grains, which after dehusking would leave around 400 jin (about 200 kg). They also had to pay taxes to the government. With many family members, their tax was higher.

According to the rules, each person had to pay fifty wen per year, so the eight members of the Su family amounted to four liang of silver. If they didn't have silver, they could pay with grain. In the market, one jin of polished rice cost ten wen, while unpolished rice cost six wen. Theirs was unpolished, so each person had to pay over eight jin of rice, totaling almost seventy jin.

For the eight family members, 300 jin of rice wasn't enough for a year, so they had to rely on potatoes and sweet potatoes for sustenance. In famine years, even these were scarce.

Su Jing could bring home thirty jin of rice each month, which was not enough for the family for a month.

Just a few days ago, he brought home some rice, and they had saved it all for her.

"It's delicious. The sweet potato is fragrant and sweet. I like it!"

Mother Su tried to take it, but Su Guan dodged. She knew the Su family's situation from the original story, so she couldn't be too delicate.

She didn’t waste food, eating a sweet potato, a wild vegetable pancake, and finishing her rice.

This was her first meal back at the Su family, and aside from a small incident with her fourth brother, everything went smoothly. She must have left a good first impression on the Su family.

Unpretentious and gentle, with polite manners!

After dinner, Su Jing took her to her room. There were three rooms in the house: one for Father Su and Mother Su, one for her alone, and one where the five brothers squeezed together on a large bed, which was warm in winter but terribly hot in summer, leaving them all sweating profusely.

Her room was small, but it had everything needed: her own bed, her own wardrobe. As the only daughter in the family, she had the luxury of her own room.

Although the Su family was poor, they doted on their only daughter. In the original story, the five brothers never let Gu Yue do any fieldwork or cooking. Despite living in the countryside, she was like someone whose fingers had never touched spring water. Apart from basic necessities, her life was impeccable.

There were several pairs of embroidered shoes by the window, all in good condition, in stark contrast to her brothers' shoes, which were either torn at the toes, split on the surface, or patched up.

The same went for clothes: new for three years, old for three years, patched for another three. Clothes were handed down from the eldest brother to the next, worn as long as they lasted.

"You must be tired too, today. I'll get you some hot water for washing so you can have a good sleep!" said her eldest brother, fulfilling his duties despite their initial strangeness.

"Big brother, go rest. I can manage on my own. You've been walking all day, and you have to return to the academy early tomorrow, right?"

He had come to pick her up in the morning and accompanied her back in the afternoon.

However, Su Jing just smiled:

"Now is the busy farming season. The academy has a one-month break during both spring planting and autumn harvest. The teachers need rest too, so I'll be busy with harvesting at home this whole month!"

It was September, the harvest season, something Su Guan hadn't considered.

"Then let's go to the kitchen together to fetch water. I should get familiar with the house too!"

"Alright!" Su Jing agreed with a smile, and they headed to the kitchen.

Their mother was still boiling water over the fire. The kitchen was filled with smoke. Seeing her eldest son and new sister enter, she immediately scolded:

"Elder son, there's too much smoke in the kitchen. Take your sister outside!"

"Mom, I'm not that delicate. I'm a farmer now too. Don't treat me like a young lady!"

Su Guan wasn't from a wealthy family in the modern world either; she could endure hardships, and they would soon see that.

Hearing this, their mother didn't stop her anymore. She had to get used to this life sooner or later.

At this time, the fourth brother, Su Yun, came back and immediately rushed to the kitchen to find something to eat. Then he encountered Su Jing carrying a bucket of hot water, taking Su Guan back to her room.

"Let me carry the water back to your room for you!"

"Thank you, big brother!"

"Why are you always so formal?" Su Jing was always so gentle.

"Such a princess, needing help even for carrying water?" Su Yun mocked.

Hearing this, Su Jing's expression darkened:

"Guan Guan is our sister. It's only right to take care of her since she just returned. As her brother, you should be considerate of her. Why are you acting so childish?"

"And when Yue Yue was here, I never saw you fetch water for her!" Su Yun retorted without reason.

"She had your protection; it was never my turn to fetch water for her. Besides, she's now the precious daughter of the Gu family, surrounded by a bunch of servants every day. She doesn't need your concern!" This was the first time Su Jing had argued so much with his brother.

This fourth brother was really too thoughtless.

"Big brother, why are you so hostile towards Yue Yue?" Su Yun couldn't understand, as the big brother also adored Yue Yue.

"It's you who's being overly hostile towards Guan Guan!"

Su Yun was left speechless, unable to find a retort. He simply bypassed them and went to the kitchen to look for food.

As soon as he entered, their mother said the food was being kept warm in the pot. Seeing meat, Su Yun devoured it voraciously. It was different now that the 'delicate princess' was back – there was even meat to eat, and so much of it.

After he finished eating, their mother slowly explained:

"Your sister Guan Guan specially left it for you. She barely ate a few pieces of the meat I cooked for her, sharing most of it with her brothers. You ate the most!"

Hearing that the meat was left by the 'delicate princess', Su Yun almost wished he could spit it out, but having already eaten it, spitting it out would be a waste of food. Since they were young, the children of the Su family had always cherished food.

Perhaps their mother said this only after he finished eating because she understood him well!
