The hall buzzed with life, vibrant and crowded, voices mixing with the clink of glasses as people laughed, ate, and drank in celebration. Inside, the air was warm, lively, and filled with joy. But just on the other side of the walls, the night pressed down totally opposite—silent, heavy. Not a single star picking through the pitch-black sky, not even the faint chirp of crickets dared to disturb the suffocating gloom.
“What a miserable night to be born,” a voice murmured. Taehyung stood by the window, isolated from the people inside, his gaze lost in the suffocating darkness beyond.
Taehyung had always known he was different. From the day he was born, it was clear that he was weaker than the other omegas in his pack. His body was frail, his strength almost nonexistent.
His parents, though kind, sometimes looked at him with sadness in their eyes, and pack members, while never outright cruel, often whispered behind his back.
He had always felt like a burden.
As Taehyung approached his 18th birthday, the weight of his perceived uselessness became heavier. While other omegas his age thrived and blossomed, he remained weak and fragile, often sick and always struggling to keep up. He had overheard enough conversations to know that some even doubted if he would find a mate at all—who would want an omega like him?
Forcing those negative thoughts aside, Taehyung tried to enjoy his birthday party. It was a huge gathering, as he belonged to the respected Sunset Pack—not too big or too small—and many honored guests were invited. Turning 18 was a big deal in their world, and it was a prime opportunity to meet one’s fated mate.
"Huyng, let’s dance!" Yeonjun, his younger brother, grabbed Taehyung’s hand, pulling him towards the lively dance floor.
"You go ahead. I’m not feeling well."
Yeonjun's face fell, but he quickly released Taehyung’s hand. "Are you sure? I can stay with you."
"I’ll be fine, really. Just enjoy yourself."
Taehyung’s heart ached as he watched Yeonjun walk away, his excitement dimmed. This was a tactic he often used: whenever he didn’t want to participate, he’d say he was unwell, and no one would press further. But this time, it wasn’t merely an excuse—it was a shield to protect him from further humiliation.
Why was he being humiliated at his own party? He was supposed to be the center of attention, right? Yet he knew the truth: this gathering wasn’t solely for him. It was a celebration for his younger brother, who had just become the second head of their pack.
Kim Beom-seok, the third child of the Kim family, an Omega now holding a significant position in their pack.
(In this world, there are two leaders: the 1st head and the 2nd head. They don’t have to be married or related. The 1st head deals with external issues, while the 2nd head manages internal matters. Anyone can be the 2nd head—Alpha, Omega, or Beta—but only an Alpha can be the 1st head.)
The Kim family had four children:
1. Kim Changbin - Alpha
2. Kim Beom-seok - Omega
3. Kim Taehyung - Omega
4. Kim Yeonjun - BetaEven though they claimed this party was for Taehyung, he felt like a ghost, standing in a corner as guests crowded around Beom-seok, congratulating him on his new role.
Taehyung loved his family; he truly did. But he couldn’t deny the truth—he felt unwanted. Everyone treated him as if he didn’t exist. Whenever he attempted to contribute, the response was always the same: “You can’t do this; go rest. We’ll handle it.” It was as if his presence faded a little more each day.
