"You better tell me what the fuck it is that you did," I shouted angrily at the stunned supersolider that was simply staring at the limp boy that lay at his feet.
"This– this is my son," he whispered, in complete disbelief. "Oh my god. My god. This- this is my son!"
What? First they start shouting at each other in Russian (which I'm going to make Friday translate for me later), but what does he even mean? His son? This is the first time they met for god sakes!
"Yea, I'm gonna need a bit more of an explanation than just that buddy," I called out, after I got over my shock and decided that I actually needed to first help the unconscious Peter lying on the floor. I imagined my own son in his place. Is this what he would have looked like at that age? Was... was he this quiet and serene when he died?
I scooped up the awfully light child and quickly rushed him over to the med bay with Dr. Cho. I asked Friday to give her the quick rundown of his medical history so that she could properly check up on him.
"What were they talking about so intently that made him pass out like that?" I muttered to myself, confused about the situation and terrified for Peter, who was just lying down defenseless on the bed.
I decided to leave the room, thinking that my worried presence wouldn't do anything but just annoy Helen as she worked. I saw the rest of the Avengers waiting outside the door, looking confused.
"Just start talking," I demanded, taking a seat on one of the blue cushioned chairs we have in the waiting room.
"I- I knew, what did you say his name was? Peter? I knew him from Hydra," Bucky whispered. Dread washed over me as panic started to settle in my bones. Why hadn't I just trusted my gut and believed myself when I thought Peter was from Hydra.
"Hydra. As in evil Hydra? As in cut off one head and grow back Hydra? As in the one we've trying hard to overcome?" Sam asked, sounding shocked and in disbelief. Bucky just nodded, clearly emotional, but I needed him to keep talking.
"How long was he there? How long did you know him? Why don't you know his name if you said you knew him from Hydra?"
"I-the thing is, at Hydra, we don't have names. I was WS-42 and Peter was S-20. After they put him in the same cell, with the intention of me training him to become the next winter soldier, I started calling Peter "the little spider" because I didn't know his name and those were his enhancements. I think he was in Hydra his entire life, though I only knew him the past few years. Can't say for certain though, time is hard there."
"His whole life?" Steve repeated, aghast at the thought of a young child being in the hands of Hydra for so long.
"We were treated horribly, as you could imagine. All of the torture and training that I had to go through in the beginning of my time in Hydra was still going on for Peter. While I spent training him all morning, they would keep him in the afternoon and experiment on him and do horrible things. They, they treated us like we weren't people. We weren't even human to them. Just collared up prizes they kept in a cell."
Bucky looked terrified, but forced himself to keep on talking.
"It wasn't his fault. He's not a monster. He's not. He's a person. He's my son. No matter what he did under Hydra, you can't blame him. Please.
He has spent far too long not being loved."
