The transport pod descended into a deep canyon, the jagged terrain and tight spaces hiding the signal we sought. Echo’s focus sharpened as we approached a rusted hatch barely visible amidst the rocks.
“Let’s get inside,” I urged, weapon ready.
Echo bypassed the security, and the hatch creaked open, revealing a narrow, cold passage. We descended into the dark, guided only by the buzz of the core’s erratic signal. The air was thick with a metallic scent, setting my nerves on edge.
We entered a vast chamber, where the core loomed—an intricate sphere of metal and circuitry, pulsing with a corrupted blue light. It was surrounded by makeshift devices, humming with the same unstable energy.
“Someone’s tampered with the core,” Echo said, connecting to a nearby terminal. “I’ll try to reverse it, but this is complex.”
I scanned the shadows, feeling the room hum with strange energy. “How long?”
“Not long, but stay alert,” Echo warned. “We’re not alone.”
Figures emerged from the darkness—androids with hostile, glowing red eyes. I raised my weapon, firing as they advanced.
“Hurry, Echo!” I shouted, struggling to hold them off. Echo worked furiously at the terminal, the core’s pulse growing frantic.
“Almost there!” Echo called. The chamber shuddered as cracks splintered through the floor. With a final surge, the core released a wave of energy, dropping the androids in their tracks.
As the core’s light steadied, Echo pulled back. “We’ve disrupted their control... but whoever did this knows we’re here.”
My heart sank at the realization. The shadows had only begun to reveal their secrets, and a greater threat still loomed in the dark.
