As the minutes passed in comfortable silence, something nagged at Shadow. Perci calling him Shady—he didn't hate it. In fact, he found himself liking the way it rolled off her tongue. It was... familiar. So, for reasons even he couldn't fully understand, he leaned in slightly.
"You know," he started, voice a bit softer than usual, "since you've given me a nickname... I think it's only fair I give you one too."
Perci raised an eyebrow, amused. "Oh yeah? What do you have in mind?"
Shadow thought for a moment, trying to find something fitting. "Butterfly."
Perci blinked. "Butterfly?"
He shrugged, looking off to the side as if it wasn't a big deal. "You're strong, but graceful. You've got that... free spirit thing going on."
A smile tugged at her lips. "Butterfly, huh? I think I like it."
Shadow grunted in response, but something shifted between them. After that, he found himself doing things he wouldn't normally do. He started helping her out around the house without her asking, his voice becoming uncharacteristically gentle when they spoke. He even paid for her food one afternoon when Dave the Intern delivered some Meh Burger to her house. It was such an odd gesture for him, yet he didn't regret it. If anything, it felt right.
Perci noticed, too. She hadn't expected Shadow to warm up to her so quickly, but he had. His gruff exterior was still there, but when it came to her, there was a softness underneath. A softness that hadn't existed before.
That evening, as the storm rolled in, the house grew cold. The wind howled outside, causing the windows to rattle. The air became drafty, and Perci shivered beneath the one blanket she had. Shadow, sitting nearby, noticed the chill and glanced over at her.
Normally, he would have ignored it—would have kept the warmth for himself. But now, without a word, he stood up, grabbed the only blanket, and walked over to her. He draped it over her shoulders, but this time, instead of leaving her there, he sat down beside her and pulled her into his lap.
Perci's breath caught in her throat as Shadow wrapped his arm around her, his chest pressed against her back. His body heat surrounded her, a warmth she hadn't expected. His white chest fur was soft and inviting, and she couldn't help but lean into him, resting her head against him.
"You're... warm," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Shadow grunted in response, not saying much, but his hold on her tightened ever so slightly. It was a small gesture, but one that meant everything. He wasn't the type to coddle anyone, yet here he was, doing exactly that for her.
As the storm raged on outside, the two sat in silence. The wind and rain could've been deafening, but neither of them seemed to notice. All Perci could think about was how safe she felt in Shadow's arms, while Shadow couldn't shake the feeling of peace that washed over him. Something about this moment... felt right.
For once, his mind wasn't filled with anger or frustration. There was no chaos in his heart. Just the warmth of the woman in his arms and the quiet hum of contentment that came with it.
Perci let out a soft sigh, her eyes fluttering shut as she nestled further into him. "Thanks, Shady."
Shadow didn't reply, but his grip on her spoke volumes. He wasn't used to caring, wasn't used to being this close to anyone. But with her, it felt... natural.
And as the storm carried on outside, the two of them stayed like that, wrapped in each other's warmth, finding comfort in the most unexpected of places.
