The storm raged on outside, the wind howling like a pack of wild animals. Inside, the atmosphere was just as chaotic, with Sonic rummaging through the closet for anything that could keep them warm. Finally, he triumphantly held up a large, fluffy blanket, shaking it with a grin.
"Look what I found!" he shouted, holding it up like a trophy.
"Great," Shadow muttered, barely looking up from where he sat at the edge of the bed, arms crossed. "Just what we need—more shit cluttering this place."
Sonic, completely ignoring Shadow's sarcasm, rushed over to drape the blanket over his shoulders. "Now this is cozy! You guys should thank me for saving the day!"
Before Sonic could get too comfortable, Shadow's hand shot out like a snake, snatching the blanket right from Sonic's grasp. "No."
Sonic blinked in disbelief. "What the hell, Shadow? I found it first!"
"Doesn't matter," Shadow growled, his expression dead serious. "This blanket is for Perci, and her only."
Shadow wrapped the blanket around Perci, who was sitting beside him on the bed, and pulled her onto his lap, tucking the ends of the blanket snugly around her. She giggled softly as he adjusted the fabric, clearly enjoying the warmth.
"See? This is how you use a blanket," Shadow said with a smirk, leaning back against the headboard with Perci comfortably nestled against him.
Sonic was fuming. "Are you serious right now? You're hogging the blanket! What about the rest of us?"
Knuckles, leaning against the wall with arms crossed, jumped in, grinning. "Yeah, come on! You've got her all wrapped up. What about us poor guys?"
"Poor guys?" Shadow echoed, narrowing his eyes at them. "You're the last people I'd feel sorry for. The blanket is for my butterfly, not for you two jokers."
"Dude, this is bullshit," Sonic said, crossing his arms over his chest, but the hint of annoyance in his tone barely masked the frustration brewing beneath the surface. "How can you be so selfish?"
Shadow's eyes glinted dangerously as he tightened his grip around Perci. "Selfish? I'm just taking care of the one person who actually deserves it. Unlike you two."
"Come on, just share it!" Knuckles pleaded, a pout forming on his face.
"No way," Shadow shot back, his voice low and steady. "It's not happening. This blanket belongs to Perci, and I'm keeping her warm. You two can freeze your asses off for all I care."
Perci smiled up at Shadow, her heart swelling with affection. "You really don't have to be so protective, Shady. I can share it if they need some."
"No," he replied, shaking his head firmly. "You deserve to be comfortable. I'm not sharing anything."
Meanwhile, in the corner of the room, Amy and Tails were curled up together, sharing a book. Tails pointed at a page, excitement lighting up his eyes. "Look, Amy! This part is so cool!"
"Yeah, it really is!" Amy replied, completely absorbed in the story, oblivious to the bickering happening nearby.
Sticks, who had been watching the entire scene unfold, saw an opportunity. With a mischievous grin, she quietly snuck upstairs, her mind racing with curiosity about what secrets Shadow might be hiding.
Shadow glanced back at the noise, instinctively tightening his hold on Perci. "Hey! What are you doing?" he called out, but it was too late—Sticks was already halfway up the stairs.
"Just investigating!" she yelled back, clearly unfazed by his tone.
Sonic snickered. "Looks like someone's about to get in trouble."
Shadow's eyes flared with irritation. "If she touches anything—"
Before he could finish, Perci turned her head, looking up at him with concern. "Shady, just let her have her fun. It's not worth getting upset over."
He sighed, running a hand through his spiky quills. "You're right, but still..."
"Hey, if she breaks something, it'll be a good excuse for you to finally get rid of that junk up there," Sonic interrupted with a laugh, his earlier frustration momentarily forgotten.
"Fuck you, Sonic," Shadow shot back, but he couldn't suppress a smirk as he settled back against the headboard, Perci still cozy on his lap.
Knuckles groaned, dramatically falling back against the wall. "Can we at least play some games or something? I'm bored as hell just sitting here."
"Yeah, Shadow! Why don't you lighten up and let us have some fun?" Sonic added, glancing over his shoulder with a glint of mischief in his eyes. "Or are you scared I'll kick your ass at something?"
"Please," Shadow retorted. "You couldn't even beat me in your dreams."
Sonic scoffed, crossing his arms again. "I'll take you on any day, Shadow. Just wait until this storm clears up!"
As the playful bickering continued, Shadow wrapped the blanket tighter around Perci, glancing down at her, his heart warming at the sight of her laughter and carefree demeanor. In this moment, surrounded by chaos and the storm outside, he felt an overwhelming sense of calm.
"No matter what happens," he murmured softly, just for her, "you'll always come first."
Perci beamed at him, her eyes shining bright. "And that's all I need."
For now, they could endure the madness—together.
