Chapter 21- Temper on Thin Ice..
October 11th/ Friday/ 9:46 PM/ MHHS Football Locker Room....
(Marty's) Omniscient POV:
Marty's heart pounded, his chest still heaving from the rush of the final play. His teammates were celebrating around him, shouting and slapping each other on the back as they poured into the locker room, but Marty could barely hear them. The victory that should've filled him with pride, the win that had just cemented his place as the star quarterback, felt hollow.
Because of him.
As he tossed his helmet onto the bench, Marty's hands clenched into fists. He couldn't get the image out of his head. The moment he'd scanned the crowd, looking for Devyn just to see if he came. He wasn't sure why—maybe part of him just wanted to see if Devyn was there, to see if he still cared. But instead of finding the familiar warmth of Devyn's gaze cheering him on, he saw something that made his blood boil.
Devyn wasn't alone. He was sitting with someone else.
Tristan.
Marty absolutely hated Tristian. It was how he got his first concussion. He hated the way Devyn looked at him—Devyn should be looking at me that way.. he thought. When him and Devyn were together whenever he saw Tristian it didn't really phase him, but now that they're apart it made his blood boil. Seeing them together was like a punch to the gut.
"Yo Marty, you good?" Akire voice cut through Marty's thoughts. Marty turned around only to be faced with the tall lightskin man standing by the locker with a concerned look on his face.
Akire was good at football, but he wasn't Marty's level of good to the point where he could carry the team. Even still, he held his own while Marty was away. Akire was Marty's best friend. They knew everything about each other like most best friends—although they obviously kept some things from each other. Devyn and Zuri were 1 of them.
Marty grunted, throwing a towel over his shoulder as he avoided Akire's gaze. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about the game."
Akire wasn't convinced. "Dude, you just won the game. You should be pumped. But you look like you're about to punch a hole in the wall."
Marty's jaw tightened, his frustration simmering under the surface. He couldn't tell Akire the real reason he was mad. No one could know. Not about Devyn. Not about the fact that seeing him with someone else made Marty feel like his heart was being torn apart all over again.
I'm just... tired, man. It's been a long night," Marty said, brushing it off as he shoved his pads into his locker.
Akire didn't push, though he gave Marty a long look before clapping him on the shoulder. "Alright. But if you need to talk or blow off some steam, you know where I'm at."
