Chapter 5- Here Today Lies The Grave of My ThoughtsThursday September 5th, 2024... Morrison High School.. 8:01 AM
(Marty's) Omniscient POV:
Marty sat in his English class not paying attention at all. Since they hadn't had any group assignments since Monday him and Devyn had no reason to talk he stared at the back of Devyn's head, occasionally snapping back into the reality of the classroom and writing down a few notes as to not get in trouble.
"... with that being concluded we will now start our first true group project. This will be a presentation project that you and your group will give to the class. I trust you all to pick a school appropriate and research worthy topic for the project. The full list of expectations and some examples will be on schology, but I expect the project to be 25 slides minimum, including a sources cited slide. You will also include the sources you used for your research on each slide. You will have 3 weeks to work on this before this is due with a lot of class time. This will be due October 2nd in class. Come talk to me if you have any questions or want a group change."
Marty perked up in his seat and started thanking whatever god was up there even tho he wasn't a religious person. He for some reason found himself missing Devyn dearly these past few days ever since Monday. It only made it worse that his brother teased him for it.
•<---Flash Back--- >•Tuesday Afternoon.. 4:57 PM... Marty's House..
Marty sat on a stool in the kitchen facing the island as he waited for his food to be done. Andre came in the kitchen for a popsicle before he started talking to Marty. "You're a dickhead by the way." He remarked as he grabbed a pair of scissors to open the popsicle. "I picked you up on time today?" Marty replied, confused as to why Andre would say this. "For leaving your friend for your girl toy. You made him walk home." Marty instantly started to feel guilty. "I asked him if he wanted a ride, he said no so I assumed his parents were picking him up or something.." Marty said trying to reassure himself that he didn't do anything wrong. "Well I saw him walking." Andre said shrugging before he walked out of the kitchen, leaving Marty looking and feeling guilty.
•<---The present--->•
The group all started to face each other to talk, Marty noticed Devyn turned a bit slower than others. Another Marty noticed about Devyn is how he dresses and acted now compared to how he did on the first day. On the first day he wore bright colors and looked more happy than he does now. Today he had on a dark grey hoodie and black sweatpants. Jennifer and Aaron noticed this too and planned to talk to him after school at Marty's house when no one else was around.
"Sooooo what are we doing?" Aaron asked as he pulled out his phone. "Well class is about to end so we can discuss it at Marty's house." Jennifer replied putting her books away. Devyn slightly nodded. "Why my house?" Marty asked. "Your mom gives us snacks." Aaron answered. "Her cookies are so good." Jennifer agreed and Marty sighed as the bell rung. Devyn hurried and packed his items before getting up and leaving before any of the other group members. Aaron and Jennifer had looks of concern on their face.
"Dude, what's up with him?" Aaron asked concerned about Devyn. While Devyn was shy around them he still was a pretty talkative and bubbly person, now he always seem depressed. "I don't know..." Jennifer said, Marty nodded his head. "We'll talk to him later, I have to go to I because my teacher will mark me late, bye." Jennifer said leaving the classroom Aaron and Marty leaving behind her. Marty made his way to his 2nd period class which was his favorite elective: Weight Training. As crazy as it was Marty loved weight lifting. With the first Football game of the season coming up he needed to train more than ever. It gave him a time where he didn't have to worry about anything, just put in his AirPods and start lifting; but today was different. Today he wasn't able to concentrate because he mind was elsewhere.. because his mind was on Devyn. He thought about how Devyn acted in first period. He thought about how Devyn acted when Jessica came. He thought about what Andre had told him.. and it all started to weigh on his mind. Today he struggled with lifting and barely did anything in this class. Soon enough the bell rang and he was forced to go to his 3rd period class, which he had With Devyn.
Today Gym was light due to the coach worrying about preparing for the upcoming football season, so they were outside doing what ever they wanted. Marty and a few others on the football ball or just boys wanting to play, decided to play football and practice catching the ball. Every once in a while Marty would look over at Devyn to see what he was doing. The first time he looked over Devyn was in a small circle of about 7 people and played a game with a volleyball where they vouched the ball in the air, as if they weee actually playing volleyball, and tried not to let it touch the ground. The second time he looked over Devyn was playing ultimate frisbee in a slightly bigger group of 11 players. The last time of the period he looked over at Devyn, Devyn was playing in a pretty large group of about 20 people and they were playing soccer. Marty took note that Devyn was pretty good at this too. Something else Marty also noted is that Every time Devyn switched games so did 1 other person. A white kid with brown hair who seemed pretty tall and athletic.
And now for the first time all day- for the first time all week, Marty looked over and Devyn was seen smiling while taking to THAT boy... Marty started to feel a tight feeling in his chest. He started to feel frustrated at the sight of them together. He started to feel frustrated at the sight of him making Devyn laugh. He couldn't concentrate on the game. He stopped running mid way, just as someone was running in his direction. He was holding the ball and was supposed to be passing it to one of his teammates. A guy on the opposing team was running towards him for the ball- he was running so fast he couldn't stop, but Marty was too busy looking at Devyn. He dropped the ball and took a step to start walking to Devyn right before-
"WATCH OUT!" The boy yelled as he crashed into Marty, both of them falling and Marty falling onto the ground head first.
"AMARION!" The coach yelled out as he ran over to him. Everyone playing any game stopped and ran over to Marty. But he was knocked out cold.
