Beverly stared at Knox for a long moment, and he stared back, not breaking eye contact with her. Finally, she nodded. "All right." She handed Knox the listing again. "This property is very old. Only certain parts of it are livable. The current owners have done some research into its history. Parts of it are in ruins and there's a small section that they've rebuilt. Unfortunately, they ran out of money and have decided to sell."

Beverly indicated the computer screen that was facing him and began to go through pictures of the property. Knox looked at them quietly, his mind racing as he listened to her speak, telling him some of the history. She was actually quite knowledgeable about it which surprised him. "How do you know so much about it?" he finally asked her.

"It's my job to know and because my parents are the current owners," she said curtly.

"So, you're the listing agent," he commented. He could also understand now why she was hesitant. She wanted to protect her parents.

"Yes."

He thought about it for a moment. There was something about it... "I'd like to go see it."

Beverly pursed her lips as she studied him. "Why?"

"Because I'm interested in possibly purchasing it," he told her. The woman was awfully judgmental.

"Fine. Give me a few moments to make some phone calls and I'll see what I can do about a viewing," she said.

"I appreciate it." Knox stood and stepped out of her office, giving her some privacy. He sighed, running a hand over his face. If he bought this place, he'd be establishing roots here. Did he want to do that?

It took her all of five minutes to arrange the viewing and they left the office to head out to the property. "I have to warn you that my father is going to be there and he's probably going to talk to you about it."

"That's fine." Her father might actually know some interesting tidbits about the property. But then, if this place was what he thought it was, so might his own father.

Beverly glanced at him, and he had a feeling her father was going to talk his ear off, but that was okay.

They finally reached the property and got out of the vehicle. It wasn't too far from the small town nearby, though if this was what Knox thought it was, the town was younger than this place. The house was more of a castle than just a house. It was sprawling and a lot of it was in ruins. His gaze settled on the crumpled tower and his breath caught. Was that the tower his mother and father had lived in? The one his father had kept his mother in, debating whether or not he wanted her? Whether he wanted to accept her as his own? Part of him could understand for the first time in his life his father's hesitation. If he was suddenly faced with a second chance, he'd hesitate too. A wave of homesickness splashed through him, but he pushed it aside as a voice rung out across the yard.

"Beverly?"

"Hey Dad." Her voice was much warmer now than it had been with him. As it should be.

Knox turned and followed her over to the man who was standing there near the entrance, waiting on them both.

He smiled at them. "And who is this young gentleman?"

"Dad, this is Knox Remington," Beverly introduced. "Mr. Remington, this is my father, William Asbury."

The man turned towards him, his eyebrow shooting up. "Remington huh?"

"Yes sir." Knox forced a smile, though his eyes twinkled. The man recognized his last name, which meant he had definitely done his homework.

"You know him?" Beverly asked her father incredulously.

"No. But this property was owned by the Remington family for centuries." William Asbury continued to study Knox like he was a bug under a microscope.
