Rintarō Suna was not one for socializing. He preferred the quiet and comfort of solitude, keeping to himself in most situations. His sharp, observant eyes often held an uninterested, almost sleepy expression, and people learned quickly not to bother him unless necessary. However, there was one person who somehow, against all odds, managed to get past his well-guarded exterior: Hana Matsuda.Hana was everything Suna wasn't—bubbly, outgoing, and relentlessly optimistic. She always had a bright smile plastered on her face and a voice full of enthusiasm, even on the gloomiest of days. Her personality was like a ray of sunshine, constantly cutting through the clouds, and it was something Suna never quite understood. Why did she always seem so happy? How could anyone be so cheerful all the time?
Suna had noticed her around the school long before they officially met. She was hard to miss with her constant chatter, the way she brightened any room she entered. She was friends with just about everyone and, much to his surprise, somehow managed to strike up conversations with even the quietest people. Suna thought of her as some sort of social magnet—one he should avoid at all costs.
That was the plan, anyway. Until fate, or something close to it, intervened.
The Library Incident
It was a Friday afternoon, and Suna was in his usual spot in the school library, tucked away in the farthest corner where no one bothered him. The perfect sanctuary for someone who didn't care much for the hustle and bustle of school life. He had his earbuds in, scrolling through his phone, pretending to study.
And then it happened.
Hana Matsuda, in all her sunshine-filled glory, appeared in front of him.
"Hi! You're Suna, right?" she asked brightly, her voice piercing through his peaceful bubble.
Suna blinked up at her, mildly annoyed. "Yeah... why?"
Hana didn't seem fazed by his curt response. Instead, she smiled even wider, taking a seat across from him without asking. "I thought so! I've seen you around. You always look like you're thinking about something interesting."
Suna raised an eyebrow. "Not really. Just trying to study."
"Really? What are you studying?" Hana leaned in, genuinely interested.
Suna stared at her for a moment, wondering why on earth she was even talking to him. "Math," he lied, hoping it would be enough to discourage her.
"Cool! I'm terrible at math," she said with a laugh, not at all deterred. "Maybe you could help me sometime?"
Suna groaned inwardly. He didn't know what it was, but something about her presence felt overwhelming—too bright, too much for someone like him who thrived in the calm and quiet. Yet, there was something oddly captivating about her openness, her unrelenting positivity.
"Maybe," he muttered, not committing to anything.
Hana continued to talk, as if his short responses weren't any sort of barrier. She told him about her day, about how she accidentally spilled coffee on herself that morning, and how she was on the school's event committee planning the upcoming festival. Suna had never met anyone so open, so effortlessly friendly.
He didn't understand her at all, and for some reason, he found himself curious.
Sunshine in the Shadows
Days turned into weeks, and somehow, despite Suna's best efforts, Hana Matsuda had become a constant in his life. She would pop up unexpectedly—whether it was during lunch, in the hallways, or even during volleyball practice. She was always there with her bright smile and easy laughter, chatting away about the most random topics.
