The bell rang, signaling the end of another school day at Nekoma High. As students began to filter out of the classroom, Kenma Kozume sat quietly at his desk, headphones on and focused on his handheld console. The sounds of the bustling hallway faded into the background, allowing him to escape into the world of his favorite video game.

"Hey, Kenma!" a familiar voice called out. It was Rika Shimizu, Kiyoko's younger sister, who had recently transferred to Nekoma. She was new to the school and, like Kenma, preferred to keep a low profile.

Kenma looked up, removing one earbud as she approached. "Oh, hey, Rika."

"Do you mind if I join you?" she asked, glancing around nervously as other students chatted and laughed around them. It was clear she felt out of place, just like he often did.

"Sure," Kenma replied, gesturing to the empty seat beside him. Rika sat down, pulling out her own handheld console from her backpack.

A Shared Escape

As they began playing side by side, Kenma felt a sense of comfort. Rika was different from the other girls he knew; she didn't chatter incessantly about the latest trends or gossip. Instead, they both dove into their games, exchanging tips and tricks as they played.

"I'm stuck on this level," Rika admitted, her brow furrowing in concentration. "It's driving me crazy!"

"Let me see," Kenma said, leaning over to help her. He instinctively felt more at ease when they were focusing on the game, and he couldn't help but admire her determination.

"Thanks! I really appreciate it," she replied, her eyes lighting up as he helped her through the tough parts of the game. For the first time in a while, Kenma felt a connection with someone.

After a while, they finished their gaming session and Rika sighed contentedly. "That was so much fun! I didn't expect to meet someone else who loves video games as much as I do."

"Yeah, same," Kenma replied, feeling a warmth in his chest. "Most people just don't get it."

"Right? It's nice to find someone who understands," she said, glancing at him with a smile.

A New Friendship

Over the next few weeks, Kenma and Rika became inseparable during lunch breaks and after school. They would often meet up in the library or at one of their houses to play video games. Kenma found solace in her company; it was refreshing to be around someone who didn't demand his attention or expect him to be someone he wasn't.

One afternoon, while they were playing at Kenma's house, Rika's expression shifted. "You know, I really appreciate this time we spend together. It's nice to have a friend who gets me," she said, glancing sideways at him.

Kenma paused the game, looking over at her. "Yeah, I feel the same way. It's rare to find someone who doesn't mind being low-key."

Rika's smile widened, and Kenma felt a flutter in his stomach. He realized how much he had come to look forward to their time together. "What do you want to play next?" he asked, hoping to steer the conversation back to familiar ground.

"How about we try that new game that just came out?" she suggested eagerly.

Comfort Zones

As they dove into the new game, Kenma noticed Rika seemed a bit quieter than usual. "Are you okay?" he asked during a break between levels.

Rika hesitated, fiddling with her controller. "It's just... I've been thinking about my parents," she admitted, her tone turning serious.

Kenma's heart sank. He knew from Kiyoko that Rika's parents were divorced and that she had moved to Tokyo to live with her father. "Is everything alright?" he asked softly.
