As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over Karasuno High, Sugawara Kōshi felt the familiar excitement and anxiety of the new school year. As a third-year student and the vice-captain of the boys' volleyball team, he had responsibilities to uphold, but there was something uniquely exhilarating about welcoming the first years. He loved being a mentor and guiding the younger students, especially those who shared his passion for volleyball.

Today was special; he was looking forward to seeing how the new recruits would mesh with the team. Among them was a girl he had heard about from his friend Yachi, who had mentioned her friend Hasegawa Chiyo, a setter for the Karasuno girls' volleyball team, would be joining the club.

The First Day of Practice

As the team gathered for practice, Sugawara stood at the front, watching the new members file in. There was a mix of nervousness and excitement among them, and he couldn't help but smile. It was a familiar sight, one he had experienced just two years prior.

"Alright, everyone! Welcome to the Karasuno volleyball team!" Sugawara announced, clapping his hands to gather their attention. "I'm Sugawara, the vice-captain, and I'm here to help you guys get started on your journey. We've got a lot to learn, but it's going to be a lot of fun!"

As he spoke, he scanned the crowd and spotted Chiyo. She stood slightly apart from the other first-years, her short brown hair framing her face as she listened intently. There was a spark of determination in her eyes that caught his attention.

"First, let's start with some warm-ups! I want to see everyone give it their all!" Sugawara continued, his voice full of enthusiasm. The first-years responded with a cheer, and he felt a rush of excitement at the prospect of shaping these young talents.

A Quick Introduction

After warm-ups, Sugawara gathered the first-years to introduce themselves. One by one, they shared their names and what position they hoped to play.

"I'm Hasegawa Chiyo!" she said confidently when her turn came. "I'm a setter on the girls' team, and I hope to learn a lot from all of you!"

Sugawara felt a smile spread across his face at her enthusiasm. "Great to have you, Chiyo! I'm sure you'll fit right in with our team."

As practice continued, Sugawara couldn't help but notice Chiyo's determination. She was quick on her feet, and her sets were impressively accurate. There was something about her that reminded him of himself when he was a first-year—eager and ready to learn.

Finding Common Ground

After practice, Sugawara took the opportunity to talk to Chiyo as she gathered her things. "You did really well today," he said, leaning against the lockers. "Your sets were impressive for a first-year."

"Thanks! I've been practicing for a while," Chiyo replied, her cheeks flushing with pride. "I really want to contribute to the team."

"I can see that," he said, a genuine smile on his face. "If you ever need tips or advice, feel free to ask. I'm here to help!"

"Really? That would be amazing!" she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. "Yachi said you could help me improve my sets."

Sugawara's heart warmed at the thought of being a mentor. "I'd love to! We can set up some practice sessions together."

Study Session

The following week, Sugawara invited Chiyo to study with him at a nearby café. They had agreed to meet after school, and he was excited to spend time with her outside of practice.

As he arrived at the café, he spotted her sitting at a corner table, her textbooks spread out before her. She looked up and waved, her smile infectious.
