Kei Tsukishima was not what one would call a typical high school volleyball player. While most of his teammates were energetic and outgoing, Tsukishima preferred to keep to himself, his sharp wit often masking his insecurities. He had an analytical mind and a penchant for sarcasm, which set him apart from the more boisterous players on the Karasuno High team. But his life began to change when Yuna Mori entered the picture.
Yuna was the polar opposite of Tsukishima: bright, bubbly, and always smiling. A member of the school's art club, she was known for her creativity and warmth. Yuna had a talent for bringing people together, and her passion for art was infectious. She often spent her afternoons sketching in the park, capturing the beauty of everyday life, and it was there that their paths crossed.
A Chance Encounter
One sunny afternoon, Tsukishima was lounging on a bench, pretending to study while actually scrolling through his phone. The park was mostly quiet, save for the occasional laughter of children playing nearby. Suddenly, a soft voice interrupted his solitude.
"Excuse me, is this seat taken?" Yuna asked, gesturing to the empty spot next to him.
Tsukishima looked up, slightly surprised. "Uh, no, go ahead."
She smiled brightly as she sat down, pulling out a sketchbook from her bag. "I love drawing in the park. The light is perfect this time of day."
Tsukishima raised an eyebrow. "You're an artist?"
Yuna nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! I find inspiration in everything around me. What about you? What do you do?"
Tsukishima shrugged. "Just play volleyball. Not much to draw there."
"Really? I think there's a lot of beauty in sports!" Yuna said, flipping through her sketchbook to reveal drawings of various athletes mid-action. "Look at the movement, the expressions! It's all so dynamic."
Tsukishima hesitated, intrigued despite himself. "I guess I never thought of it that way."
"I'd love to draw you sometime," she said with a teasing smile. "I bet you'd look awesome spiking a volleyball."
He scoffed, crossing his arms. "You'd just be drawing a guy who can't stand losing."
"Exactly!" Yuna laughed, her eyes sparkling. "I want to capture that determination. I think it's fascinating!"
Tsukishima was taken aback by her enthusiasm. Most people only saw him as the cynical, detached player. But Yuna saw something deeper, and for some reason, that made him feel... seen.
Building a Friendship
From that day on, Yuna made it a point to visit Tsukishima in the park after school. She would sketch, and he would provide sarcastic commentary on her drawings, which became their routine. The more they spent time together, the more Tsukishima found himself drawn to her bubbly personality and carefree spirit.
"Why do you always sketch in public?" he asked one afternoon, watching her as she worked on a drawing of a local street performer.
Yuna paused, looking thoughtful. "It helps me observe people and capture real emotions. Plus, I love the energy around me. It inspires my art."
Tsukishima shrugged, his expression contemplative. "I don't get it. I prefer to keep things to myself."
"Maybe you just need to let loose a little," Yuna suggested, her smile unwavering. "It's okay to express yourself!"
"Easy for you to say," he replied, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're a walking art exhibit."
"Exactly! And you're a walking volleyball encyclopedia. We both have our strengths," she teased back.
