Sathya stood frozen at the window, staring at the raindrops that fell like tiny glass beads, reflecting the heaviness of her heart. But her mother's voice jolted her back to reality.
"Beta," Lakshmi called from behind, her voice gentle but concerned.
Sathya quickly wiped her tears away, furiously trying to erase the evidence of her sorrow. She turned to face her mother, forcing a smile as best she could.
"What happened, Sathya?" Lakshmi asked, her brow creased with worry.
"Nothing, Amma. I was just watching the rain," Sathya replied, her voice barely above a whisper, the words tasting bitter in her mouth. It was a half-truth, one she didn't have the strength to elaborate on. She didn't want to talk about the whirlwind of emotions tearing her apart inside.
Lakshmi, sensing her daughter's unease but choosing not to push, picked up a piece of ladoo and held it up to Sathya's lips. "Here, have this, beta," she said with a soft smile, her love shining through the simple gesture.
Sathya hesitated for a moment before taking a small bite, the sweetness of the ladoo contrasting with the bitterness in her heart. She smiled awkwardly, her lips curving upward, but her eyes betrayed the sadness she was hiding.
Lakshmi leaned in and kissed Sathya's cheek, her warmth momentarily soothing the ache within her. "Finally, you've agreed to this marriage. I'm so happy, Sathya. I'm the happiest person in the world," she said, her voice filled with pure joy. She lingered a moment longer before heading toward the kitchen, leaving Sathya standing in the quiet.
The moment her mother was out of sight, Sathya's smile vanished, replaced by a sadness that weighed heavily on her chest. She turned and slowly made her way upstairs to her room. Once inside, she sank onto her bed, the soft mattress barely offering any comfort against the storm brewing inside her. She sat there, staring at nothing, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
Meanwhile, in the car that carried Sidh and his parents home, the conversation was entirely different.
Parvathy and Prakash sat in the front, discussing the proposal, clearly pleased with the way things had gone. "Sathya seems like such a sweet girl," Parvathy remarked. "Her family is very kind."
Prakash nodded in agreement, adding, "Raju Bhai said the same. They're a respectable family."
But in the back seat, Sidh was miles away, both physically and emotionally. His gaze was fixed on the window, watching the raindrops race down the glass, each drop mimicking the heaviness in his heart. The rain had always calmed him before, but today, it only seemed to echo the chaos inside him. He felt a deep ache in his chest, an unsettling sadness that refused to leave.
The car eventually pulled into their driveway. Sidh stepped out, moving mechanically, his body going through the motions while his mind lingered on thoughts of Sathya. As soon as he reached his room, he collapsed onto his bed, staring up at the ceiling. His thoughts were consumed by her. What had he done? What had they become?
Back in her room, Sathya lay on her bed, curled up, her face pressed into the pillow as silent tears streamed down her cheeks. The weight of everything-Sidh, Niyasha, the proposal-crashed over her like a tidal wave. She couldn't hold it in anymore.
Her phone buzzed, cutting through the heavy silence of her room. She wiped her eyes and glanced at the screen. It was Arunima.
Sathya sniffled and picked up the call, her voice weak as she answered, "Hello...?"
"Sathya, what happened? Your voice doesn't sound right. Are you okay?" Arunima's voice was filled with concern, immediately sensing that something was wrong.
Sathya's resolve crumbled at the sound of her friend's voice. She broke down into sobs, her heartache pouring out. "Aru... I... I don't know what to do," she cried, her words barely coherent between her sobs.
Arunima's voice became urgent. "What happened, Sathya? Did something go wrong with the marriage proposal? Please, talk to me."
Sathya's words tumbled out in a rush as she recounted everything that had happened-the proposal, her mother's joy, and most painfully, Sidh's lingering sadness. "It's Sidh... it's him again, Aru. He... he was so distant today, so quiet. I could feel his pain, but he wouldn't even look at me. I don't know what to do."
Arunima was stunned, trying to piece together the situation. "Sidh again? But Sathya... he's your crush. You've loved him for so long. What's stopping you now?"
Sathya's sobs intensified as she let the truth spill out, the words tasting like poison. "It's Niyasha, Aru. He told me he loved her. He told me he could only see her as his wife. How... how could I compete with that?"
The other end of the line went quiet for a moment before Arunima spoke again, her voice soft. "Oh, Sathya... I'm sorry. I didn't even think about Niyasha when I asked. I didn't realize..."
"Why, Aru?" Sathya whispered through her tears. "Why does love always hurt? I keep trying to make things right, but it's never enough. Love isn't meant for me. It never was." Her voice broke again, and she dissolved into another wave of sobs, her body trembling as she cried.
Arunima's heart broke for her friend. "Sathya, listen to me. You need to stop crying. You're stronger than this. Please..."
Just then, Sathya's phone buzzed again. She wiped her tears and glanced at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. Sidh.
Her hands trembled as she stared at the name flashing on her phone. Her heart skipped a beat, confusion and fear swirling inside her.
"Aru... it's Sidh. He's calling me."
On the other end of the line, Arunima's voice was firm but reassuring. "Take a deep breath, Sathya. Answer it. Don't cry anymore."
Sathya's heart pounded as she stared at the phone, unsure if she had the strength to hear whatever Sidh had to say. But with shaking hands, she swiped to answer.
"Hello...?" she whispered, her voice barely steady.
