The bell rang, cutting through the chatter of the classroom, signaling the start of recess. Ms. Nair stood at the front of the class, her usual calm smile on her face.
“Time for interval, kids! Enjoy your break,” she said, as the students began to stir.
Arunima, full of energy, grabbed my hand excitedly. “Come on, let’s explore the school! We need to figure out where everything is.”
I nodded, letting her pull me along as we slipped into the bustling hallway. The school felt even bigger now, filled with students laughing, talking, and hurrying to their own corners of the building. The atmosphere was vibrant, a mix of excitement and nervous energy. I could feel it all around me, the rush of new beginnings, of friendships waiting to be formed.
As we passed a group of senior girls leaning against the lockers, their voices caught my attention.
“Omg, Sidh is so handsome!”
“I wish he’d notice me. He’s, like, perfect.”
“Who wouldn’t want to be his girlfriend? He’s the coolest guy in school.”
My heart skipped a beat at the name. Sidh. Could they be talking about the boy I ran into earlier?
“Yeah, Sidh is totally famous around here. He’s a legend,” another girl chimed in, flipping her hair like she was already imagining herself with him.
Their words clung to me, piquing my curiosity. I couldn’t help but wonder… Who is Sidh? Was he really that popular? And more importantly, could he be the same boy I’d bumped into this morning? My thoughts whirled, trying to piece together the fragments.
Arunima must have noticed my distraction because she nudged me with her elbow. “Hey, what’s going on in that head of yours?”
I hesitated for a moment, then decided to ask. “I was just wondering… who’s this Sidh everyone’s talking about?”
Her eyes sparkled instantly, as if I had just mentioned some celebrity. “Oh, you mean Sidharth Menon? He’s the school’s football star. Seriously, everyone knows him! And he’s... well, let’s just say he’s pretty hard to miss.”
Sidharth Menon. The name echoed in my mind, heavy with curiosity and something else I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Could he really be the same boy I collided with? The thought made my heart flutter, though I didn’t fully understand why.
“He’s super popular, especially with the senior girls,” Arunima added, her voice lowering like she was letting me in on a secret. “He’s talented, good-looking, and totally out of reach for us. But yeah, he’s definitely a big deal around here.”
I nodded, trying to keep my expression neutral, but my mind was already racing. Sidharth Menon. The name felt important, like it would mean something to me eventually. My thoughts drifted back to the boy from earlier—tall, well-built, with that teasing smile that made my stomach flip. Could it really be him?
As we wandered through the school, I found myself scanning the faces we passed, hoping to catch a glimpse of him again. My curiosity tugged at me, a little stronger with each step. But as much as I searched, he was nowhere to be found.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that our paths would cross again. And when they did, I had no idea how much my life would change.
