chapter twenty eight - break

So far their date was quite... awkward.

Ana looked so beautiful with her hair pulled into a braid, several pieces that escaped the grasp of the hair tie was curled to perfection.

She wore a beautiful pink dress that ended just above her knees and rocking the whole look with some gold heels.

The couple sat in tense silence as they quietly ate the different treats and delicacies, Ana had baked.

Trying to diffuse the overwhelming tension, Ben cleared his throat before taking a bite of a hors d'oeuvre, to which he moans quietly in delight.

"This is the best thing I ever had." He praised her, taking another one from the plate.

"Thank you... I'm glad you like it." Ana smiled genuinely, taking a bite of a chocolate chip muffin.

Ben nodded enthusiastically, shoving a piece of macaroons onto his awaiting mouth.

"I more than like it. Seriously, It's the best! You're the best..." He told her softly.

With his words, the redhead chuckled nervously, tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear. "I try to be." She muttered.

The king placed his hand on her, interlocking them together. "You don't have to, baby. You don't have to be the best all the time, you're already perfect in my eyes."

Ana rolled her eyes, feeling it slightly tear up. "Not in the eyes of the kingdom..." She sadly said, trying to fiddle with her fingers, but Ben stopped her by placing a kiss on her ring finger.

He could sense she was growing uncomfortable and tried to comfort her by what he knew best, being there for her.

This past few months has been hard for them, and Ben knew he wasn't always there by her side as he promised, but he was trying his best to make it up to her.

Seeing as the redhead continued to stare at her plate, Ben softly called out.

"Baby, look at me..."

Ana took a deep breath, gathering as much courage as she could before locking eyes with the man she loved so much.

"I love you. I love you and only you." Ben told her with so much love, it pained her heart to hear his words. "And nothing is ever going to change that-"

"Ben.." Ana breathed out shakily, clasping her hands tighter around his own.

"-I don't care about what other people think, fuck their stupid opinions." He angrily said. "All I know is that I want you here by my side."

The princess bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes. "Ben... I-" Words died out of her mouth as she saw how the hazel eyes she loved so much, match her own.

Shaking his head, Ben gripped her hands tighter, afraid to let go. "N-No, don't say it!" He begged, struggling to hold in his own tears. "please..."

The red head looked away and closed her eyes, causing her own to fall and roll down her cheeks.

The sight of him caused her great pain that she couldn't bear to look at him.

There, secluded from the prying eyes of the world, the two royals who loved each other so deeply held one another with a vice grip, fear etching their hearts for what's to come.

"I don't think this is working, Ben."

The King sharply took a breath, hearing the words he dreaded so much.

"No, you don't mean t-that." He tried to say firmly but failed as he stuttered his last words "And now what? You're just going to give up?"

"No! Ben, It has been so hard for me-" She tried to reason to him.

The king stood up abruptly, anger taking over his being. "Yes! Some things are hard! But do you think learning to be king has been easy for me?!" He exploded.

"No! I know that It's not-"

"I thought we were in this together!"

Ana stood up, trying to reach for him. "Ben, we are in this together!"

"But we're not, Ana... it's not-we're not."

"I'm so tired, Ben." She sobbed, as more tears fell. "I'm exhausted. I don't think I can keep up like this. L-Like I'm some-some princess."

Ben's eyes softened as he tried to calm down. "Ana..." He called out trying to reach for her, but the redhead avoided his touch.

"You're right... we're not in this together, Ben. You- You have a kingdom to run!" She exclaimed, putting her hands up in frustration.

"Who am I to butt in and be selfish?" She painfully said. "Your juggling your time for me when you don't have to-"

Ben cut her off. "So you're saying that we- we should..." He couldn't utter the words.

Ana nodded, avoiding his eyes, knowing how much she hurt him. "We should take a break."

Silence filled the chateau as the couple looked at everywhere but each other.

But despite this silence, one can hear two hearts that once beat for each other, shattering in an instant.

"Don't give up on us, please."

"I'm sorry, Ben."

"Ana... please." The king begged once again for the princess.

"I-" Ana was cut off by the sound of ringing from Ben's phone.

Her blue eyes snapped towards it as the man tried to ignore it. "You should take that." She sighed as she turned to walk away but her lover's grip on her arm stopped her.

"Don't l-leave me like this." Ben cried, holding her close before wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his head onto her shoulder. "I love you so much, pl-please don't leave me."

Ana, in turn, wrapped her arms around his neck as she cried. "I-I'm not leaving you, I don't think I could ever." She whispered the last part as tears ran down her cheeks.

"I just- I think we just need time away f-from each other."

Ben hugged her tighter, shaking his head. "Ana... please."

"I'm so sorry, Ben."

Hey guys! I'm soooo sorry for the late update.
I took a break last year when school got to me and exams were coming up, the next thing I knew it was already the second semester, and I got freaking MATH- which I barely survived btw. FUCK. PRE-CALCULUS. HATE. IT.

Anyways, I didn't think this book would get all these love from all of you guys. I just had this sudden idea after the news of Descendants- Rise of Red which kinda ruined some of my positive juju towards the Descendants franchise and it made me want to make my own version.

GOOD NEWS! I plan to continue this fanfic till Rise of Red, only for a few chapters tho, since I plan to make it kind of like an epilogue for the series, I don't want to write something that could further complicate my book.
