Erika's POV

"Erika! Hurry up, we're going to be late!" Emily yells impatiently from downstairs.

My blonde hair flows behind me as I rush around the room, getting ready for work. I'm trying to get everything I need but every time Emily yells it distracts me. When I finally have my bag packed, I head downstairs.

When I make it to the bottom of the spiral staircase, Emily is leaning against the front door. Her long dark red hair is a few shades off from the mahogany door. "It's about time you got your ass down here. Are you ready to go?" She asks like she's waited an eternity for me when it's only been twenty minutes.

I roll my eyes at her dramatic antics. "Yes, I'm ready to go."

We walk out the front door to her new black Mercedes convertible that sits in my driveway. Getting into the car, Emily drives us to work. She pulls into the parking lot beside the building we work at.

Investigations INC. is plastered to the front of the building in big, white, bold letters. Investigations INC is a very large company that investigates anomalies and paranormal activity.

The drive wasn't bad but there is a large crowd of reporters with cameras and notepads waiting for someone to arrive. Me.

"Well looks like they're back." Emily says as she throws the car into park. "Are you ready to face the swarm?" Emily asks looking at me with her blue eyes and back to the crowd outside the building.

"No." I say with a heavy sigh before getting out of the car.

As we walk together towards the building, I drown out the voices and don't realize that when we get into the building, Emily is talking to me.

"Did you even hear a word I said?" she questions, crossing her arms over her chest in the elevator as we ride to the eighteenth floor.

I shake my head. "No, I blocked everything out as we walked in and just started listening. You were saying?" I ask, hoping she won't be mad for having to repeat herself.

"I said we need to get better security out front." Emily said with a small smile.

"I don't think anyone expected me to become famous after my first assignment. How was I supposed to know that my report would be read all over the country? I didn't know people were so into Egyptian mummies. If I had, I would have never taken that assignment." I say, shaking my head.

The elevator doors finally open and we walk out, heading to our offices. When I reach my office, I unlock the door and head inside. The walls are painted white, and big windows look out into the city.

I place my bag on the desk as I notice Anna walk into the room. "Gregory would like to see you." She announces and flips her brown hair over her shoulder before walking out.

Gregory is my boss; he runs Investigations INC. Knowing that the only reason his assistant would be coming to me would be because he couldn't make the trip himself. I didn't even have time to settle in before I am summoned.

I sighed, what could it be now?

Groaning internally, I prepare myself for the worst. Walking out of my office and down the hall to Gregory's, each step I take feels like it's weighing me down.

When I reach his office, I notice the blinds are drawn. Cascading the room in darkness. I wonder how long he's been at work.

Gregory is moving around his office in a haze, and I take a moment to observe him. His large figure stands with sweat stains under his arms. His bald head appears shinny which leads me to believe he's been here for hours; focused on something. Papers are scattered across the room, leaving no surface space untouched. I'm about to knock on the wood for when he notices me.
