Jenny’s POV
The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over the park as Jacob and I strolled hand in hand down the winding path. It was one of those perfect evenings where everything felt like it had slowed down just for us. For the first time in what felt like forever, there wasn’t a crisis or drama hanging over our heads—just the two of us, out on a simple date.
It almost felt normal…as normal as it could get since I had just gotten turned into a vampire. The thought still hurt me and left a bitter taste in my mouth, but I guess Jacob knew that and that was why he suggested we went out together this evening.
“You know, it’s kind of nice to not be fighting off vampire hunters or dealing with ancient prophecies for a change,” I said with a grin, squeezing Jacob’s hand. “Just a regular date like regular people.”
Jacob chuckled, glancing over at me with that lopsided smile I loved so much. “I don’t know if anyone would ever call us ‘regular,’ but yeah, it’s nice. I’m glad we did this.”
I looked up at him, feeling a warmth spread through my chest. For all the craziness in my life lately, Jacob had been one of my constants. Even with everything happening with Ian and Sophia, even with my own… new reality as a vampire, he had been the one of the things that made sense. He kept me grounded.
We found a bench near the edge of the park, under the shade of an old oak tree, and sat down. The air was cool, but not too cold, and the faint sound of kids laughing in the distance made everything feel a little more… normal. Human, even. I’d been craving that sense of normalcy so much lately, and sitting here with Jacob, it almost felt like we could have it.
“So, what do regular people do on dates like this?” Jacob teased, pulling me closer as I leaned against him. “Do we talk about work or…?”
I rolled my eyes playfully, nudging him with my shoulder. “I don’t know, maybe we should have brought a picnic or something. Or gone to the movies.”
“Next time, I’ll pack sandwiches,” he said, laughing. “And we can sit under the stars, like in those cheesy romance movies.”
I laughed along with him, but there was a comfort in the idea. A simple life. “I’d like that.”
For a few moments, we just sat in silence, watching the last bit of daylight slip beneath the horizon. The colors in the sky shifted from gold to pink, then purple, casting an amazing glow over the park. It was the kind of view that made you forget about everything else for a while.
“You ever think about what it’d be like to just… have a normal life?” I asked quietly, my head resting on his shoulder.
Jacob was silent for a moment, and when he finally spoke, his voice was soft. “Yeah. Sometimes. Especially lately.”
I looked up at him, studying his face. There was something in his expression that made my heart ache a little. I knew Jacob had been through so much, between his duties in the vampire realm and dealing with the constant threats to our lives. But there was a sadness there too, a longing for something simpler.
“Do you ever miss it?” I asked gently. “Being human?” I have always wondered. He and Ian had been humam for a little while before they were transitioned into vampires.
He turned to me, his dark eyes serious. “I used to. But not anymore. Not since I found you.”
My heart skipped a beat, and for a second, I couldn’t speak. I wasn’t used to Jacob being so… vulnerable. He was always the strong one, the one who held everything together when things went wrong. But hearing him say that, knowing he meant it, made something inside me soften.
“I’m glad I found you too,” I whispered, my hand resting on his chest. “Even with all the craziness.”
He smiled down at me, and for a moment, we just stayed like that, lost in each other. I could feel the steady beat of his heart beneath my hand, and it was comforting, knowing that even with everything going on, we still had this. We still had each other.
Jacob leaned in, brushing a soft kiss against my forehead, and I closed my eyes, letting myself melt into the warmth of the moment. It wasn’t the wild, all-consuming passion we usually shared—it was quieter, more intimate. And in a way, that made it even more special.
“So,” I said after a while, breaking the comfortable silence. “Are we going to keep pretending that everything’s okay, or are we going to talk about the giant vampire elephant in the room?”
Jacob sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I was hoping we could get through at least one date without talking about all the supernatural drama.”
I gave him a sympathetic smile. “I know. But we can’t ignore it forever.”
He nodded, his expression growing serious. “I know. It’s just… everything’s been so intense lately. With Sophia, with the Council. And now with what’s happening to you…”
I tensed slightly at the mention of my own situation. I still wasn’t used to thinking of myself as… different. As one of them. The fact that I had been turned, that I was now a vampire, still felt surreal. And while Jacob had been nothing but supportive, I could tell it was weighing on him too.
“I didn’t ask for this,” I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t want this life.”
Jacob’s grip on my hand tightened, and he turned to face me fully, his eyes filled with determination. “I know. And I swear, Jenny, I’m going to find out who did this to you. And when I do—”
“You’ll kill them,” I finished for him, my tone flat.
He didn’t deny it, his jaw clenching with barely controlled anger. “They took away your choice. And for that, they deserve to pay.”
I stared at him for a long moment, trying to process everything. The truth was, I wanted revenge just as much as he did. Whoever had done this to me had stolen my life, my future, and I wasn’t about to let them get away with it. But there was also a part of me that was scared—scared of what this new reality meant, scared of the darkness that now seemed to hang over me like a shadow.
“Jacob,” I said quietly, reaching up to cup his face in my hands. “I love you. And I’m angry too. But we can’t let this consume us.”
He closed his eyes, leaning into my touch, and for a moment, the tension in his body seemed to melt away. “You’re right. But I can’t just let this go. I need to do something.”
“We will,” I promised him, my voice firm. “We’ll figure it out together. But tonight… can we just have this? Can we just be us, without all the anger and revenge?”
Jacob opened his eyes, and the intensity there made my heart ache. But after a moment, he nodded, his hand covering mine where it rested on his cheek. “Yeah. Tonight, it’s just us.”
I smiled softly, feeling some of the heaviness lift from my chest. “Good. Because I’m not done with this date yet.”
He chuckled, the sound warm and familiar, and the tension between us faded. “Alright. What’s next on the agenda, then?”
I grinned, standing up and pulling him with me. “How about ice cream? I know a place that’s still open, and I could really go for something sweet.”
Jacob laughed, his eyes lighting up with amusement. “Ice cream? After everything we’ve been through, you want ice cream?”
“Hey, just because I’m a vampire doesn’t mean I don’t still have cravings,” I said with a playful smirk. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”
He shook his head, still laughing, but I could see the relief in his expression. “Alright, lead the way.”
As we walked through the park, hand in hand, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope. Things were far from perfect, and I knew we still had a lot to figure out. But in that moment, with Jacob by my side and living like we were normal right now, I felt better
And for now, that was enough.
