Ian’s POV

I sat by the kitchen island in my house, staring at nothing in particular. I was wondering who tried to kill Sophia yesterday, and why they tried to kill her. I had made a mistake. I should have asked for his name before I killed him. Maybe I would have gotten an information about who he was and the kind of people he dealt with.

But it was a good think I had killed him before he could get away and tell his people that he saw me. That Sophia was indeed important to me, if I was shadowing her. It meant they’d try every possible means to use her to get to me.

The supernatural realm was a very dangerous one and there was always some sort of fight for power. If I died…I didn’t want to think of all the cruel things that would start happening if I died.

This is why I shouldn’t have marked her. But in my defense I didn’t know that marking her would mean everyone would put their eyes on her and start attacking her. I needs her to be safe. And I needed to protect her to keep her safe. Or I should have just let that guy kill her and be rid of her. But no one had the right to hurt what is mine.

I ran my hands through my hair in frustration. I didn’t know what to think. There was a knock on my door, followed by the constant ringing of the doorbell. There was only one person that could try to annoy and frustrate me like this. With a scowl, I got up from the stool and went to the door to open it for him. As big as this house was, I didn’t keep any maids or human here at all. They were just too tempting and I didn’t trust myself not to kill them.

“Have you missed me huh?” He asked as soon as I opened the door. He didn’t even wait for me to tell him to come in before he did. He waltzed in like the house was his. I had already gotten used to that character of his. That was how he always does at the vampire realm anyways.

“Why would I miss you? We still spoke to each other over facetime yesterday,” I reminded him as I closed the door and turned the lock. “We speak to each other over facetime practically everyday.”

“But talking to me on facetime is not the same thing as talking to me face to face, is it?” He asked with a point as he settled down on a couch.

“You’re making me rethink my decision of calling you here,” I murmured, starting to get annoyed by his antics.

“Ugh. Fine fine. I can’t promise not to annoy you but I’ll try not to. Why did you call me here?” He asked. “Do you know how fun it is to rile you up though?”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Just when I thought you were finally being serious.”

“Ugh. Sorry sorry. I’m being serious now. Why did you call me here? It sounded like an emergency,” he answered.

“Sophia was attacked yesterday,” I explained. “Someone tried to kill her. I don’t know why. I don’t know what they want. But they tried to kill her and if I wasn’t shadowing her yesterday, she might have been dead since.”

“Yes, she might have been dead since,” he agreed, almost like he wasn’t bothered but I knew him better than that. He was bothered. He was just trying to keep it cool. Mike had a worse temper than me. “But she isn’t dead. And that’s the most important thing now. Where is the person who tried to kill her?”

“I killed him,” I answered with a shrug.

He shot up from the couch, shock taking over his expression. “You killed him?” He choked out.

“Yes. I killed him,” I confirmed.

“Well did you at least get a valuable information from him?” He asked, his eyes searching mine.

I shook my head. “I’m afraid I didn’t do that,” I murmured in reply. “I did ask who sent him. He didn’t answer me.”

“And you couldn’t compel the truth out of him?” He asked, already getting annoyed.

“I could compel the truth out of him. Yes,” I answered.

“Why?! Why didn’t you try to compel him? Do I need to teach you?!” He yelled, throwing his hands up in frustration.

“Keep your time down,” I snapped. “If I could do it, I would have! But the bastard was on vervain and I didn’t have the time nor the patience to drain the vervain out of him!”

“Well at least you didn’t try to drink his blood did you?” He asked, relaxing a bit.

“If I did, I’m very sure I’d be almost dead now,” I answered. “If not dead.”

“And so you realize why all of this is happening?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes yes. It’s happening because I marked her. You don’t have to remind me of that at ever little chance that you get!” I snapped. It was getting verb had to restrain myself every passing second. My temper was rising.

“Why did you do it? Why did you mark her? You do know that you have a bride back –”

“Do not speak of it!” I warned him.

“You have to talk about it whether or not you like it, Ian. We have to speak of this sooner or later. Your people haven’t come looking for you since you came here. And it’s a miracle that they haven’t. But if they hear that you have marked a human, all eyes will turn on the innocent girl. And Freya, your BRIDE, will be the first to kill her. What’s to say that she isn’t the one who sent that man after her yesterday?!” He yelled.

I shook my head. “She wasn’t the one.”

“You can’t be sure of that,” he answered with a scoff and shook his head. “And honestly, I don’t know why I care so much for the human girl. I don’t know why you care so much for the human girl too. It all ends in death. It’s very clear already. As clear as day. It’s either she dies, or someone turns her into one of us. Either ways, it ends with her dying.”
