09. opportunity well deserved

Lee Heeseung

Throwing the basketball inside the ring , I sat on the floor getting exhausted only watching Jake still playing. Taking the water bottle which was placed beside me, I gulped it down my throat abruptly. Finally Jake was also done as he decided to plop beside me, grabbing another bottle from the side.

"You met her yesterday." He said, his eyes darting on me which I could feel, giving him a side eye. I saw a smug smile on his face as I nodded, placing both of my hands on the floor to relax my body, covered in sweat which made me feel cold.

"I thought you were already tired of following her." His voice drips with sarcasm and teases when he lets those words out. I sighed, shaking my head, my tongue poking my inner cheeks in annoyance.

"Stop the nonsense, did you do the job I was assigned last night?" Now my eyes darted on his face waiting for his response. His eyes widened upon hearing my words as he fake gasped. "Oh no! I forgot. Please don't punish me now sir Lee." He joked around making me throw the empty water bottle towards his direction but his reflexes were faster and he caught it.

"I did that bro. It was the first thing I did in the morning after coming to campus. It was not easy to convince Mr. Choi but I succeeded." Describing all the struggle he went through he sighed making me chuckle, I am amused.

"Hand me over that." I extended my hand for him to give the precious thing I asked him to get for me. The thing that caused him all this trouble was worth it I believe. Pushing his hand inside his trousers pocket he took it out shoving towards my direction.

"Yeah, take it. Your soon to be girlfriend's number." He passed it to me but eventually also got hit by me as I gestured for him to watch out for his words. "Haerin is not my girlfriend."

"You mean not yet." He laughed but I ignored looking at the digits scraped on the piece of paper, a small smile on my face but I tried to hide it.

"I am surprised that it is the first time you didn't ask a girl for her number yourself instead you went the other way. What should I call this?" He spoke while his hands were still holding on the bottle he grabbed earlier yet didn't drink the liquid inside it. His eyes and words drip with mischief and tease.

"The reason which causes me to kill you or else shut up." I snapped glaring only to earn a laugh from him as he didn't seem to be threatened at all. Finally he gulped down the water from his bottle before he again turned towards me ready to ask another question which was occupying his brain.

"When are you going to tell her the real reason?" My body froze, the question made the smile on my face fade away. Pursing my lips I stayed still not knowing what to say. Exhaling deeply I looked away still not sure about my decision, it is complicated.

"Soon...." It was the only words that came out of my mouth before I got up putting the slip of numbers in my jacket's pocket, walking away. Jake assumed I am not ready to talk more about it and as a good friend of mine he didn't dig deeper for it.

That night contains many reminiscences about which only I remember.

“You want some coffee?” Eunji offered while we walked towards our next class which was still ten minutes away. I gave a nod to her. “I will get it.” She acknowledged me quickly walking to get it as I stood near the wall located in front of campus ground tapping my foot on the concrete path.
