23. burning hearts

Kim Haerin

"This school has better facilities than I expected. Everything looks so neat and arranged here, like some five star hotel." Yeorin retorted behind me while we put our luggage in a corner in the room we choose for ourselves as roommates.

Talking with her in these few hours I realised she was such a nice and lovely girl. She was a talkative one who was determined to make anyone her friend. Her presence alone sparkled with enthusiasm.

It was when we had to choose a partner for us to share a room with, I ended up asking her and gladly she agreed without hesitation. It actually felt like we were meant to become friends here.

"Can't they just let us rest for today? I really want to sleep on this soft mattress." Yeorin whined, rubbing the soft mattress under her palm, feeling its softness which made me smile a little.

"You cannot, unless you risk getting scolded in front of everyone." I reminded her, earning a snore groan from her before she got up, standing in the middle of the room.

"Then forget about sleep, I am going." I chuckled at her response, finding the sudden energy in her unbelievable.

"But it is not fair! They put me in a random group for orientation. I wanted to be with you but I think these university people want us to play icebreaker here." She whined, making me nod at her as we both left our room to go to the classroom which we were assigned for the orientation.

It was a pair of three people, means each student from each university and somehow I was paired up with Sunghoon and some guy from Sejong university.

Sunghoon being no one else but one of the friends of Heeseung I saw earlier but I am still glad. It is better to have his friend rather than him, at least I do not have to deal with him.

"Thank you so much!" We said in reunion once the orientation came to an end. The students seem excited about the whole campaign thing. The bright smile on their faces made me feel nostalgic as I remembered myself being a teenager.

The adult life was great and I actually learnt and enjoyed many things but the innocence of teenage times made me realise how I was literally moving forward in my life.

The curiosity we used to have about certain things in school life where we try to fit in among everyone in our peers only to realise in adulthood that no one cares about how you look and what you do.

The teenage time is an age where we discover self esteem. Adulthood was more of a time where we experienced all kinds of feelings at once and became overwhelmed.

My lips curved up into a small smile as we finally were about to leave. Glancing at everyone for the last time I made a small gesture of waving at them which the students copied waving back at me with more enthusiasm and fondness making me chuckle.

"You love children so much, don't you?" A voice echoed behind me the moment I walked out of the classroom, currently standing in the corridor. The person who approached was no one but the guy Sunghoon I met for the first time today.

He had a smile on his face as I nodded , walking slowly while he matched my pace. "I always loved kids. I think they are cute." I continued as he listened to me calmly while we moved in the empty corridor.

The only sound could be heard was students talking while in some classes just the sound of teachers teaching their lessons. The third guy who was our partner as well went earlier which caused just the two of us to leave.
