Part One
Prologue
Evergreen
Age 5
It was the first time I was granted magic. It had been a summer day, just like any other. Mother and I were having a picnic as we so often did. I was running about picking flowers when I happened upon a baby bird that had fallen from its nest.
"Mother, come quickly!" I squealed. Mother pranced over to me, holding up her navy blue gardening dress. Her long blonde hair flipped up and down behind her.
"What have you found there, Dear?"
Her soft, smooth voice always put me at ease.
"Look, Mother! The poor little bird!"
Mother pointed at the nest in the tree just above us before scooping the creature up and placing it in my little hands.
"Be gentle now, Dear."
She lifted me up in her arms and I delivered the bird back home. Before returning to its mother, the bird opened its beak and thanked me.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Glade," it said in response.
My mother had explained to me the magic of Glamora prior to this. People could be gifted magic from elves by doing good deeds. I had once asked her how the other clan was granted magic, but she could not say. All she said was she would tell me everything when I was older.
