Chapter Twelve

Evergreen

At the edge of the wood, there is known to live a wood elf. It was at his cottage that we would be spending the night.
Demetry knocked twice on the little wooden door of the quaint little cottage. A short and rather pudgy old elf with a long red beard opened the door with a smile. He was covered from head to toe in leaves of various sizes and colors.
"My old friend! I see you've come to visit once again!"
Demetry shook hands with the elf as he led us inside his cottage.
"Haggolthorn will house us tonight before we launch a surprise attack on the castle in the morning."
I looked around the little cottage as Demetry said this. There were many shelves with various specimens from nature sitting on them. A poisons berry here, a bear skull there.
In the attic, there were two beds. One large king bed and one queen bed. It would be a tight squeeze for all of us, but we could make it work.
An old and tattered book with a blue leather cover was left on the bed. The gold foil writing was almost rubbed off, but I managed to make out the title. It read, Vepo.
I flipped it open and was met with a novel of sorts. Tomorrow, I told myself. I'll read it tomorrow. I took the bed immediately and soon sleep fell over me.
I didn't once notice the absence of the man I had just begun to trust. I didn't notice him slip out the front door, nor did I hear his footsteps as he walked away from the cottage. Oh, what a naive fool I had been.
