Chapter Thirteen
Brikwood"My queen."
I bow to her just as the sun begins to rise.
"I have gathered inside information on your upcoming attackers. They are arriving very soon. We must prepare."
She smiles. It was one of the rare times.
"Rise Brikwood."
I do as she commands. She brushes her hand against my left cheek. It was one of her rare displays of affection for me.
"You have proven yourself to be quite useful to me. I am proud of you."
Those few words meant everything to me. I bowed to her again quickly so she wouldn't see the tears forming in my eyes.
I had never known my parents. Not really. They were taken from me while I was still so young.
This woman, this queen, has been the closest person to a mother I've ever had. Sometimes, I hated admitting that. She could be very wicked. But wasn't I just as wicked for doing her biding?
I excused myself from the room and went outdoors.
"I'm sorry, Evergreen."
